Siren Review: Dead in the Water (Season 1 Episode 7)

Reviews, Siren

In an attempt to finally catch a mermaid things take a drastic turn for Xander and his father, and Maddie’s father finds his killer on Siren Season 1 Episode 7, “Dead in the Water.”

Xander’s determination to catch a mermaid of his own tends to shroud his judgment calls lately, and it’s come full circle to bite him in the butt. Xander’s intentions aren’t to get anyone hurt, but his plan is a little reckless and gets his father killed.

It’s evident that Xander is going to blame himself for the death of his father, and I see a downward spiral coming his way as well.

Siren Season 1 Episode 7
SIREN – “Dead in the Water” – When Ryn is taken in for questioning, Maddie rushes to her rescue. Meanwhile, Ben and Xander return to the deep sea to search for answers, only to be met by an uninvited guest. This episode of “Siren” airs Thursday, May 3 (8:00 – 9:01 p.m. EDT) on Freeform. I think he’s going to be so focused on trying to catch the mermaid that killed his father that he won’t be able to think about anything else. The guilt is going to eat him alive until he can take revenge and get justice for his dad.

The mermaid who stabs Sean, Xander’s father, is not afraid to get his hands dirty and won’t back down from humans. He’s smart; he knows that he can easily take all of them. Which is why Xander is going to need to be prepared the next time he ventures out to sea in hopes to catch, or slay, himself a mermaid.

Although Xander will probably fight, I wish that he would take a break and focus on getting his life back on track before trying to find the mermaid again. There are other pressing issues that need to be handled first. Otherwise, I feel like he’s going to work himself into the ground.

On a side note, Xander also thinks pretty highly of himself when it comes to doing the impossible. After witnessing the bloodbath on The Cortez, his immediate thought was to still catch a mermaid for himself. I don’t know what he thinks he can do against the sirens when an entire navy boat can’t even take them.

Maybe it’s because I’ve never had a close relationship with my parents, but I don’t understand the sense of maximum betrayal because your adult daughter has her own life and secrets.

Not everything has to be shared, even if you want to know the information, contrary to popular belief. It’s her right to keep whatever information she wants to herself.

With that being said, I’m glad that she tells him the truth so he’s no longer in the dark on the situation. Having a father who’s the sheriff of the town can come in handy when you’re trying to hide a mermaid who’s committed murder.

In the beginning Ryn outing Ben and Maddie to the sheriff seems like a bad idea, but it turns out to be a good decision. If Ryn had continued to sit and not say a word things could’ve gone a completely different route. It was a possibility that we could have had two dead fathers in one episode.

Siren never fails to fascinate and keep me intrigued, but I wish that we could see more of the mermaids at sea. A few shots from Donna’s viewpoint in the water after she leaves Ryn would be lovely.

Other Thoughts:

  • It’s sad that Xander is never going to be able to bury his father.
  • Decker is like a drug addict when it comes to the siren song the mermaids emit.
  • I can see Deputy Staub and her curiosity being a problem in the last few episodes.
