Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season Finale Review: Jake & Amy (Season 5 Episode 22)
It has been a long, glorious, hilarious, touching march down the aisle, but we did it, Nine-Nine! Peraltiago is married! The Season 5 finale gives us everything we hoped for from a Peraltiago wedding by including the whole team in the love fest.
Love wins on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 5 Episode 22, “Jake & Amy,” all butts about it.
My favorite love line of the episode is from Amy Santiago when she nails her vows, saying:
There is a bomb at this wedding as well. It’s your butt. Your butt is the bomb. There will be no survivors.
Jake’s reaction to Amy’s call back to his earlier butt bomb reference is simply the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen. Then, the rest of the 99’s reaction to HIS reaction, is the second sweetest thing I’ve ever seen. It is such a tender, light, knowing, and romantic moment.

The only thing that could have made it better is Alicia sitting beside Rosa.
Actually, scratch that. While I absolutely adore Gina Rodriguez as Alicia on “Jake & Amy,” I am happy to see Rosa enjoying the wedding without any distraction.
Rosa gives a big smile as two of her very best friends get married.

It’s not only a rarity, but a solid sign that Rosa’s arc over the season has come to a satisfying conclusion. Rosa can show her love for her friends, in public, knowing that they accept and love her just as she is.
Pass the shredded paper, I’m tearing up!
Amy breaks away from her Type-A tendency to speak off the cuff about what Jake means to her.
I love this choice! It is not an over-wrought sentiment either.
She tells him and their guests that there is no way for her to control everything. But marrying Jake, the love of her life, lets her relinquish some of that fear and anxiety and makes room for the fun and joy she shares with her groom.

And isn’t that what Brooklyn Nine-Nine has shown us is at the heart of every great love story? Joy, shenanigans, adventure, fun. For the Nine-Nine, love is a heist, a game night, and a finished puzzle.
Captain Holt pronounces Amy and Jake wife and husband in the most Holt way possible: updating their paid time off status from pending to active. This is perfection! I adore and relish the intimacy the jokes on Brooklyn Nine-Nine provide us.
Holt tells Amy and Jake that he is sure they will have a:
Childish and distracting marriage.
This sounds like an insult, but coming from Holt, it is all soft tenderness. It also totally rings true.

The jokes are stellar, but the emotional impact of Captain Holt telling Amy and Jake he loves them (and them being able to say it back) is simply unmatchable.
It is a truly hopeful and magical thing that in a moment where the romance between the show’s main couple is the focus, the love they both have for their boss hits perhaps the highest emotionally resonant note.
Gina gets in on the romance in the most narcissistic way possible, but it is heartwarming and sincere nonetheless. In the effortlessly inappropriate and entirely roundabout way, Gina is a huge part of the evening’s romance and success.
I continue to hope for more Gina, and now that Brooklyn Nine-Nine is definitely coming back for Season 6, there will be more opportunities for MORE GINA! I am so happy.

All the episodes over the last five seasons have led step-by-step to this precious place of love. But honestly, it actually feels surprising.
How, amongst the silliness and slapstick, have I come to care so deeply and so authentically about this family? How am I so taken with each giddy smile and supportive gesture? I am head over heels, and it is well after the honeymoon period for this show!
Speaking of head over heels: Gina Rodriguez’s character’s love story with Rosa (the one I have been impatiently waiting on for weeks) is peak twitterpation.

I squeal with delight when they “vibe” over their mutual disgust for hats.
So random! So Rosa!
As is the heart of the episode, Terry’s joy in connecting Rosa to a new love interest is just as powerful and heart-warming as the new crush.
It never gets old! I love seeing the different members of the precinct show up for each other and revel in each other’s joys.

It is easy to miss because it isn’t flashy or shippy, but the loyal friendship and support on Brooklyn Nine-Nine is absolutely its greatest love story.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine has subtly and surely made us fall deeply in love with the entire team. I simply cannot imagine a better season finale for a show that was canceled and then saved by a new network than the love-filled “Jake & Amy.”
