Supergirl Review: Schott Through the Heart (Season 3 Episode 14)
Hiatuses are no fun. That goes double for hiatuses that come at relatively short notice and last for two and a half months, as Supergirl fans know well. Wonderful as Legends of Tomorrow is, we sure wish both shows could have aired together.
But, at last, never fear! Supergirl Season 3 Episode 14, “Schott Through the Heart” is here! And while the return episode isn’t quite as Worldkiller-heavy as I might expect, it still packs an emotional wallop to bring us back with a bang.

We haven’t had a Winn-centric episode since season one, save for a few moments of focus on him between then and now. It’s something I’ve been waiting for a long time, and I’ve been holding high expectations.
By and large, the show meets those expectations. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have his mother played by Oscar-nominated actress Laurie Metcalf; she of so much beloved television and film. Yet this works because everyone, include all our main characters, brings their A game.

Jeremy Jordan does so much with the complicated back story suddenly thrust in our faces, as well as the hidden secrets Winn suddenly learns. While it turns out Mary has reason for leaving, and for everything she did, her son has held on to two decades of hurt. He deserves to feel it.
The other thing we get that we haven’t in a long time is true bonding between James and Winn. In James’s own words, they are brothers. And James is there when Winn needs him like family should be.
Because of time constraints, Winn’s path to forgiveness is a little rushed. I get it, but I do wish there was more. He and his mom have a lot of rebuilding to do. I hope Mary can return when Laurie Metcalf is free. Her son has needed her for a long time.

Watching Winn struggle to reconcile with his mother is a heartbreaking story with a hopeful end. But watching J’onn’s father begin to display signs of an alien version of Alzheimer’s is a punch to the gut, through and through.
Like with Winn’s resentment towards Mary, we can understand why M’rynn lashes out at Alex. He’s facing an unimaginable path, just when he’s found joy in a lifetime of suffering. But Alex only wants to help him, and we hurt for her, too.

J’onn, meanwhile, is going to have to process all this. Having lost his entire family, getting his father back is a miracle. Now that miracle has seemingly been put on time limit. Can’t anyone just be happy?
While Kara and Mon-El’s interactions aren’t quite as emotionally grueling, they sure do bring the drama. We now know a lot more about the Legion’s true mission and how it directly ties to the third Worldkiller.
In a brief interlude from that, it’s also nice to see Kara tell Mon-El he needs another outlet for his feelings about Imra. It’s even nicer to see him understand that already. What they have will always be quite the story, but it needs to progress naturally and be fair to all involved.

Finally, while Lena is almost entirely absent this episode (and I do wish she could bond with Winn, given all they have in common,) the final seconds offer an answer. She’s fully devoted to helping Sam, and whatever she’s planning, it’s quite the process.
It also doesn’t seem safe for her to take this on by herself. Our relief from the World killers will be brief, and I’m terribly anxious about what’s to come.

(One last thing about karaoke: come on, guys, I know it’s almost meant to be terrible, but these actors are such wonderful singers. Show that!)
