Black-ish: 7 Best Moments from ‘Dog Eat Dog World’ (Season 4 Episode 19)
Black-ish Season 4 Episode 19, “Dog Eat Dog World.” is filled with delightful family moments as the Johnsons debate whether or not to get a dog after Jack comes home with straight A’s. This light-hearted episode is something we definitely need if the preview for next week’s episode is any indication.
Here are our favorite moments from “Dog Eat Dog World.”

ANTHONY ANDERSON
1. When Jack revealed he got straight A’s
Jack has never been the smartest person in the Johnson family, so it’s a delight to see him not only succeed in an academic area but also get something he’s always wanted.
It’s extra fun to see him get a one up on Dre who sometimes prides himself on being more clever than he actually is.
2. Why Dre really doesn’t like dogs
Dre reveals that he kicked a dog once in defense of little Zoey. Which makes sense from his perspective as a new parent. Everyone going after him is something that would absolutely happen, especially today in internet culture.
Dre’s perspective of hating the way we value dogs over people is totally understandable, but not quite a good enough excuse to go back on his promise to Jack.

3. Diane’s chaos vote
Dre’s backup plan to use a family vote to wriggle out of getting a dog immediately backfires when Dre banks on Diane voting with him. Dre getting one-upped by both of the twins in this episode is kind of adorable.
Dre can be overconfident sometimes so when the twins outsmart him it’s a dose of humility that he definitely needs. Other highlights during this moment: Rainbow getting to claim Devante’s vote because of Ruby’s nepotism and Jack’s pure win and total excitement.

4. Junior teaching the twins what comes with taking care of a dog
This is a recurring moment but each of Junior’s lessons is hilarious and definitely important things to be aware of before getting a pet. Kids can get blinded by the pure excitement of having a pet, but it’s not always magical.
Junior makes sure that Jack and Diane are prepared for all the aspects of having a dog, which makes him the stealth MVP of this episode.
5. The microaggressions from the rescue placement coordinator
Even in this lighter episode, Black-ish makes us aware of the little ways in which racism is still so prevalent in our society. The way this woman looks down upon Dre’s education, and their home, which is very nice, is clearly judgemental beyond reason.
This moment doesn’t make the list as a moment I really enjoyed as much as the others, but as a moment that makes little things like microaggressions clear to the audience.

6. Bring your dog to work day
Dre’s co-workers are almost always ridiculous, but seeing them all playing with dogs was just plain cute. Even if it fails to make Dre see their value.
Dre does have a good point though, people really should show as much care to the rest of humanity as it does to animals.
7. Dre brings home a dog
Rainbow finally gets him to see the light and understand how important a dog can be to a family. And Dre gets to be the hero and the all-around good dad when he makes his family happy.
I love that Dre picks this dog because he was actually afraid of the dog he thought he wanted. And he literally falls in love with him the minute he’s alone with the dog. “Baby Get Right” is probably going to become more Dre’s dog than anyone else’s.

OTHER THOUGHTS:
- Yohan and Ruby’s weird flirtation is just…weird.
- What even is that teaser for next week’s episode? Dre and Bow are one of my favorite sitcom couples, so I don’t like that the show might be putting unnecessary drama into their relationship.
- Who’s office dog was your favorite? I honestly love Peaches and Herb.
