The Mick Review: The Night Off (Season 2 Episode 17)

Reviews, The Mick

On The Mick Season 2 Episode 17, “The Night Off,” the gang is up to their usual sitcom shenanigans, but it’s not really working for me.

Last week, with The Mick Season 2 Episode 16, I wrote about how The Mick is basically the modern Full House.

On “The Night Off,” the gang tackles feeling unappreciated when Alba goes for a spa weekend (slash weekend trapped on the train). This is definitely another classic Full House storyline.

The thing is, we’ve seen this before… on The Mick. Not the specific plot, but the idea behind it. It’s getting a little tired to have Mickey hold something over Sabrina’s head to get her to admit she needs her.

That’s already happened several times.

What’s most frustrating, though, is that this episode should be about Alba.

It’s set up that way since Alba has a spa weekend planned and leaves a list for the gang to help them survive without her, but somehow that gets lost.

I expected everyone to realize the list (and Alba) was needed – but they didn’t even ever look at it.

Instead, “The Night Off” becomes fragmented.

First up, we’ve got Sabrina and Mickey working out something they’ve already worked out before. The worst part is that it’s not even that funny how they work it out. It all feels forced. Especially when Mickey decides to stay in jail instead of going home. Again – shouldn’t this be something Alba is doing? Does Mickey really do more than her?

Meanwhile, Ben and the Colonel walk the streets alone. This should be funny. It is funny for the thirty seconds we get it. But it’s not enough. The best moment of “The Night Off” is when a sex worker asks Ben if he’s looking for a good time and he responds:

“We’re already having a great time, but thanks.”

Plus there’s this whole weird Jimmy-Doug thing. I like Doug, but the story about Anderson is uncomfortable and maybe even a little homophobic. I know The Mick is trying to do the opposite, but I’m not sure its working out.

And then we have Chip. I have to admit that the only moment that gets me this week is when Chip cuts off his fingers. I legit jumped in my chair.

Otherwise, though, Chip’s storyline is bland as well. I mean, The Mick is better than a Home Alone like montage of sandwich making.

Or, at least, it should be.

The Mick tends to teeter between okay comedy and brilliant. “The Night Off” definitely leans way more toward okay comedy. I don’t hate it, but it’s not everything The Mick should or could be.

There are, however, some solid one-liners. At least we can always rely on The Mick for that:

  • Mickey to Ben – “It will be dark when you close your eyes.”
  • Jimmy – “Dude, here’s the thing… I don’t believe in luck.”
  • Doug calling Jimmy “Jimmy crack corn.”
  • Sabrina to Mickey – “Is that really how you want to spend your remaining days?”
  • Mickey about Sabrina – “My aforementioned bitch niece.”
