The Magicians Review: The Fillorian Candidate (Season 3 Episode 12)
Things start going well for our heroes right before they take their final trip to restore magic on The Magicians Season 3 Episode 12, “The Fillorian Candidate.”
The Magicians penultimate episode is magnificent, emotional, and is a downright phenomenal hour of television. Seriously. I cried, twice. Tears of joy, but still.
The journey is coming to an end for everyone, and things are starting to go right for everyone besides Quentin. I understand why Quentin has a hard time deciding on what to do; his dad is healthy and alive, but if he brings magic back there’s a chance that his father’s cancer could come back with drastic effects.
On the other hand, I don’t think that it should have been that hard of a decision. Everyone, and I mean literally everyone, has sacrificed something in this quest to get magic back. Quentin should have been able to make that decision from the get-go considering what’s at stake.

I’m happy that he takes the time to visit his father and let him know of what’s to come. That way he doesn’t have a guilty conscience of not telling his father anything and just allowing it to happen to him. Plus, his father takes it very well and I think that’s because he knows how important it is.
I am in love with how powerful Julia has become. I have always known that she was going to do something huge and here it is, better than I could’ve ever imagined.
I have a theory: Julia is becoming her Lady Underground.

Julia developing into her Lady Underground would explain why her powers have transformed into something so powerful. On top of that, her Lady Underground hasn’t been responding to Julia for quite a while. Coincidence, maybe.
Right now I can’t see any other reason as to why Julia would be hearing prayers and helping people the way she does. She even admits to Dean Fogg that she’s become more than just a magician. We know she has Reynard’s god power, but she’s right, it’s evolved into so much more inside of her.
Or she could just be gaining her own individual god power and purpose. There are so many ways that this could go and I can’t wait to see what the show has in store for us.

With that being said, I’m still a little worried about how things will go down when she tries to open that door. Who knows if that bullet will kill whatever monster is behind there and if it doesn’t there’s no guarantee Julia will be able to save anyone.
I think that because her powers have been at such a level high she feels that she’s invincible, but they’re about to go up against the real end of the world, so I think she needs to slow it down just a bit and triple check everything in the plan.
I love that Julia gets to redeem herself and bring back the forest that she destroyed when she had no shade. I also love that Reynard became a worthless nobody with nothing to his name. He deserves a lot worse, but at least he’s miserable living a worthless human life.

Margo getting wrote in on the ballot and winning by a landslide in the race for king of Fillory, by all of the animals because she supports bestiality, is the most shocking, wonderful thing to ever happen on The Magicians.
Margo deserves every shred of good karma that comes her way. She has been through so much and then when it was time to fight and get the kingdom back she couldn’t even do anything. Well, turns out that no matter what Margo is always going to be the Queen and peasants better recognize before they doubt her royal highness ever again.
“High King, Margo. Long may you reign.” I am not exaggerating when I say that I cried at this moment. Eliot and Margo have been through so much, and in a race where Eliot worked his butt off to win Fillory back Margo won, and he could’ve been upset, but he wasn’t. I know that it felt wrong to think Eliot would be upset, but even Margo tried to apologize to him in the beginning.

I do wish that they would’ve killed Tick instead of keeping him. Guards or not he did them so dirty, and he needs to be punished.
Another scene where I cried? The Fairy Queen restoring Margo’s eye with a fairy eye. Margo demonstrated her loyalty by destroying her eye, and now she’s been rewarded with a brand new one.
The only thing that I’m concerned with when it comes to Margo getting a fairy eye is that nobody knows anything about them so they don’t know if it could be potentially harmful to her.
I can see where Alice would be okay with helping the library gain the power to control who has magic, but at the same time she had to know deep inside that it was wrong. Alice is afraid of getting her magic back, and honestly, so I am I.
Alice has proven multiple times that magic has a way of taking her over and leaving her out of control. So, yes I can understand she wants to give it to the library because she knows that if she asks they won’t give her the magic back.
Other Thoughts:
- The key replacing current timeline Penny with 23rd timeline Penny is beyond messed up. I think that it’ll be a breaking point for Kady.
- I can’t believe that Fray became a waitress at a bar in a relationship with a bear.
- I don’t understand why Fen would think she or Eliot would have to be stuck with one another. Fen could easily live a life on earth and visit Fillory on occasions when she wants.
- The bunny repeating “eat my ass” is one of the funniest things in the entire episode.
