Grey’s Anatomy Review: You Really Got a Hold on Me (Season 14 Episode 13)

Grey's Anatomy, Reviews, Station 19

Andy Herrera reminds us of someone we know pretty well, and I’m not mad about it all.

On Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 Episode 13, “You Really Got a Hold on Me,” we meet the leading lady of the upcoming Grey’s spinoff, Station 19, Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz) — and she’s literally got her hand inside of a body in an effort to save a life.

What’s most striking about Andy is that she shares the same kind of drive as Meredith Grey. It’s no secret those two women bond almost immediately. It’s really quite an introduction. We get a sense of Andy’s personality, work ethic, and leadership all while we see Grey-Sloan Memorial through her eyes.

She’s thrown into the midst of surgery and even finds herself using a clamp as Meredith walks her through it. This gives us a chance to see so many layers of the character we’ve only just started getting to know. What I really appreciate, though, is how she works in the story of Grey’s Anatomy.

This isn’t just a chance to meet the heroine of Station 19, but she directly affects what’s happening with Meredith when she steps in to take that call — and sets up a meeting so Meredith can present her case and hopefully get the patent she needs for her project.

It’s another example of women helping women, which seems to be a particularly strong theme this season. And I love it — it feels good to see that kind of support happening on television as opposed to watching the kind of cattiness and competition that we so often get with female characters on other shows.

Andy is also there with Ben, who is now officially working as a firefighter — and he’s struggling a little with the transition. It’s hard for him to be there at the hospital, to know what needs to be done, and to not be able to be a part of it any longer.

It only makes sense that he’d wonder if he made the right decision, but Bailey points out that he basically just hasn’t processed it yet — he hasn’t had a chance to “feel it” yet.

And what Ben says to Andy sums it all up perfectly. He explains why he’d be so willing to give up being a surgeon in order to be a firefighter, reminding us about the time he used a clipboard to crack open a chest to save a life. Add to that the way he delivered April’s baby — Ben has had this in him all along. Thinking about what we’ve seen him do makes me even more excited to see Station 19.

Meanwhile, Amelia, Alex, Andrew, and Sam are focused on finding a way to help their patient, Kimmie, who we were introduced to on Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 Episode 12, “Harder, Faster, Better, Stronger.” It’s exciting and fun to see them experiment, but the urgency also hangs overhead. They have a real, human motivation to save this girl who lights up the room.

The situation is made complicated when Amelia invites Tom Koracick in hopes of getting his help and expertise.

There’s so much happening under the surface here, it’s hard to know where to begin. His relationship with Amelia is complicated, to say the least, Alex’s dislike for him seems like it’s about more than the fact that he’s a jerk, and ultimately, he’s the one who comes up with the idea that might just save Kimmie’s life — and likely, he’s going to take all of the credit.

Both Alex and Amelia say so much without saying in throughout all of this. Justin Chambers, in particular, deserves kudos in the way he conveys such a mix of emotions just through eyes. By the way — I love everything that’s happening with his character right now. There’s nothing like watching Alex becomes invested in a peds patient like this, especially when you consider how far his character has come.

And singing with Kimmie? Bring on the waterworks. I don’t know if I’ll be able to take it if Kimmie doesn’t live.

Other thoughts:

  • Qadri taking off her hijab to use it on the little boy is such an amazing moment, and I love the interaction she has with Owen about it.
  • The way April is acting reminds me SO much of Cristina after the hospital shooting. Remember when we saw her dancing on the bar and slamming tequila shots?
  • Andy: “We don’t have to hug now, do we?” Meredith: “Oh God, no.”
