The Magicians Review: A Life In The Day (Season 3 Episode 5)
Eliot and Quentin live their lives in an alternate time on The Magicians Season 3 Episode 5, “A Life in the Day.” Meanwhile, Margo is stuck dealing with more bidding from the fairy queen.
Quentin and Eliot’s journey together is magnificent, brilliant, emotional, and downright fantastic. We may only see the two of them together at one place for their whole life in Fillory’s past, but it’s the connection between the two that makes it so unique.
It’s heart-warming to know that throughout their time together in Fillory Eliot is Quentin’s rock, even when he had a wife and a child. Eliot became the gay uncle and was there every step of the way with Quentin as he raised his son.

It’s apparent that Eliot is the only person who kept Quentin going by the shots of Eliot holding Quentin as he cries, Eliot covering Quentin and his son up with a blanket, and Eliot holding onto Quentin’s shoulder as they watch Quentin’s son walk away on his own journey.
Quentin and Eliot even kiss, which is not a major shock because Quentin is bisexual. I mean, the only man that we’ve seen Quentin sleep with is Eliot when he has a drunken threesome with him and Margo.
So, maybe it’s not safe to say that Quentin is 100% bisexual, but there is something there. Quentin, after all, is the one who kissed Eliot, Eliot kisses back, but Quentin made the first move.

I think that their friendship evolved into something else over the years and I think that it could be a potentially great storyline to explore. Eliot and Quentin would be the next best ship on The Magicians, and I would fight for their happiness no matter what.
Their bond is strong and pure. They grew old together and, eventually, Quentin buries Eliot after he passes away. Now that they are back in Fillory, alive and in present time, and have all of their memories returning I expect to see a closer bond between them.
I expect to see Quentin and Eliot act differently towards each other. You can deny it, but it’s ridiculous not to assume that they began having real feelings for one another after all that time spent together.

My heart breaks for Margo in “A Life In The Day,” because she’s being forced by the fairy queen to marry someone she doesn’t want to. Even when she finally does come around prince Micah is beheaded by his own brother, forcing Margo to marry an underage, psychotic teen.
Margo deserves a break from all of this drama for once in her life. She’s being ripped apart piece by piece with nothing to do, and suddenly she gets a note saying that the two people she loves in the world are dead.
There’s a good chance that the fairy queen overheard Margo’s plan to kill her so now Margo has to be on the lookout, or she could be the next one the fairy queen comes after now that Eliot and Quentin have returned.

If Margo has to continue to be forced to stay in this marriage with a psychotic child my only hope is that he takes her commands since women ran their world.
The truth has come out, Julia has a sprinkle of Reynard’s powers courtesy of Lady Underground. I can absolutely understand where Julia is coming from when she says she doesn’t want it; Reynard raped Julia and now she, yet again, is being forced his seed no matter what she has to say.
With this bomb of information finally revealed it’s only a matter of time before Julia does find a way to give Alice her powers.

Alice wants magic and Julia no longer wants hers, but I don’t think that Julia should give it up. Julia was chosen and given these powers on purpose and for an exact reason, even if she doesn’t know the reasoning yet. She needs to keep them and not give them away.
I’m curious if her powers are growing more and more each day because when magic initially went away, she didn’t say anything until months later. Now, she was able to save Kady’s life doing this magic, but how? How did it evolve from just a little spark to enough magic to stop someone from overdosing?
The logical reasoning has to be that her powers are continuing to build day by day.
“A Life In The Day” is easily the best episode of Season 3, so far.
Other Thoughts:
- Poor Kady, her fight to break out of Krick Memorial is going to be a big one.
- I think that if Julia backs out of giving Alice her magic, it could start some real drama between the two, especially with how obsessed Alice is with magic.
- “Oh honey, you ain’t even top 50, and you ain’t getting another chance to kill my husband.” – Margo is my favorite quote from the episode.
