The Good Doctor: Top Quotes from “She” (Season 1 Episode 14)

Reviews, The Good Doctor

On The Good Doctor Season 1 Episode 14, “She,” the interns are pitted against each other in a competition to see who gets the best patient satisfaction scores. It’s Kalu and Shaun against Claire and the new intern, Morgan.

Here are some of the top quotes from “She.”

Doctor against Doctor

Morgan: Every time you win, I lose.

This is where Dr. Morgan Reznick, a newcomer to the team, draws her line in the sand. Up to this point, all of the interns have been working together to learn and grow as doctors. However, this one moment with Morgan shows that things are changing.

She is telling Claire that this is a cut-throat business and that even though they are colleagues it doesn’t mean they can be friends. As hard as it is to see two women being pitted against each other, in an already women scarce career, it’s understandable.

The hospital only has two spots beyond internship and they have four interns. You do the math. I just hope this means that Claire isn’t going to take this laying down and will work her hardest to be seen as the shining star.

I am completely invested in seeing where this goes. As annoying as I find Morgan, and as much as I want her to disappear, she may actually be that trigger for Claire to truly step up and be the doctor I know she is inside.

Understanding

Shaun: I don’t know what it feels like to be anyone but me.

Quinn: Me too.

This storyline is definitely The Good Doctor‘s best to date. In such a trying time for equality in history, this show continues to amaze and astound with its level of understanding and acceptance of diversity.

Shaun really struggles with his patient because in his overly logical brain, male genitalia means male gender. However, the person before him is identifying as a girl. This all changes once Shaun spends more time with his patient.

This moment shows that he realizes he’s not much different from Quinn. He too struggles to show the world who he really is because of what is shown on the outside.

Having Shaun be her primary contact for the doctor side of things was a unique way to tell this story. Shaun’s struggles with understanding and misgendering are actual depictions of what it can be like for young people just like Quinn. It makes an even bigger impact when Shaun finally understands because of who Shaun is and his own personal struggles with public perception.

There are many ways the writers could have gone with this subject matter and I believe that this story was told with the most respect. If I learned a thing or two about the transgender community and their struggles, you can bet many other people watching did as well.

The New Neighbor

Kenny: You aren’t going to do laps or anything?

Shaun: No.

Kenny: What are you doing?

Shaun: Understanding.

Shaun’s quest to find a friend outside of his job continues. This new neighbor is definitely abrasive and bold. I mean he broke into Shaun’s apartment, while he was there, to hang out.

That distinct gung-ho attitude of Kenny’s is just what Shaun needs. Where Lea was understanding and patient with Shaun, Kenny is pushier. It’s a nice balance of what Shaun needs.

In the beginning, he needed someone who is softer and gentler. He was merely dipping his toes into the friendship waters. Now, he is more experienced and he needs a friend who will push him to live and enjoy life. Maybe even break a few rules.

I can’t wait to see where Kenny will take Shaun. I just hope it won’t be another road trip.

Rise Up

Melendez: I didn’t tell you to read it to rub it in your face. I told you to read it so you’d know what to deal with.

All episode long it appears that all Claire’s efforts are being overshadowed by Morgan or unnoticed completely. Then at the end, her mentor brings her back with a statement that shows he sees right through everything Morgan throws at him. He knows and sees Claire for Claire.

This is a turning point for not only Claire but also Melendez. For one, Melendez has been more of a bystander than a teacher and motivator. He is harsh and sometimes guarded, but always silently observing.

He chooses this moment to reveal just how much he really knows because he knows it’s the right time. Moving forward, we can truly expect Melendez to guide and teach, as he should have been all along.

Claire learns that if she wants to stay in this game she has to rise up and be THE Dr. Browne. Her hypercritical mentor sees her potential. Now, she just needs to take his words and use them to grab that future career she so desperately deserves.

This gives me hope that Claire’s actions all season are going to climax in her getting a spot on the Saint Bonaventure team. Her compassion and care for her patients is what makes her a great doctor. I’d want her operating on me any day.
