The Magicians: Top Moments from “The Tales of the Seven Keys” (Season 3 Episode 1)
The Magicians Season 3 Episode 1, “The Tales of the Seven Keys,” is an excellent episode for the beginning of the season.
Fillory is in danger with the fairies taking over, magic is still gone, and Penny is still dying.
Here are my top moments from “The Tales of the Seven Keys.”
Star-Crossed Lovers
Penny and Kady continue to be one of my favorite things about The Magicians. Magic is gone, and while Kady is stuck on earth trying to figure things out, Penny has to continue working for the library all the while dealing with cancer that eats away at him while he is on missions on earth.
I’m upset that we don’t get to see much of Penny and Kady in “The Tales of the Seven Keys,” but knowing they play a vital role in the plans to regain magic everywhere is why I’ll be okay with it this one episode.

The Fairies
The fairies have taken over Fillory, but the guards of the castle have no idea what’s going on because the fairies have used their powers of invisibility to shield themselves from anyone seeing them besides Eliot and Margo.
Eliot and Margo have had their fair share of difficult times where they thought they wouldn’t make it out alive, but this is the one time where I genuinely fear that either of them could do something wrong and end up getting axed from Queen Fairy Witch.
In reality, Margo had all of this coming. If she had never made a deal with the fairies then Fillory would merely be dealing with a magic power outage, not being taken over by a group of bloodthirsty fairies who care about nobody but themselves.

Oh well, what’s done is done. It’s time for Eliot and Margo to begin setting a trap for the fairies and take back what’s theirs, which means that they’re going to have to figure out a better way of communicating with Quentin on earth rather than dropping down a thousand bunnies to leave little messages.
Magic Sparks
Quentin and Julia’s search for an original god, to me, is pointless. What makes Quentin think that an original god who could wipe him away with the flick of a finger would want to listen to him? Or even care?

Yes, magic is gone, but I don’t think that begging and crying to a powerful god is going to do anything when Quentin killed Ember. There’s always a loophole when it comes to magic, so all Julia, Quentin, and (now) Josh need to do is start researching backdoors.
If they were smart, they would track down Alice who would then track down Mayakovsky, but I’ll take a guess and say that won’t happen. Or if it does it won’t be for a few episodes.
Although, it would be nice not to have to deal with a whiny Quentin crying over Alice again so maybe he can just forget about using her for a minute.

One thing that I like about Josh helping Julia and Quentin is the friendship that could bloom from it. Both Josh and Julia are lost without magic. Yes, Julia technically can still do magic and Josh did brighten up after seeing Julia play tricks with the smoke, but it doesn’t mean that things change inside of them. Magic is still gone.
Quentin’s paranoia about Josh is uncalled for seeing as how Josh has been helping them for quite some time now. He wants magic back just as much as everyone else, he wouldn’t risk telling anyone if it meant that magic might not ever be restored.
“The Tales of the Seven Keys” is a powerful season opener and I look forward to seeing what the rest of the season has in store for us.
Other Thoughts:
- I need Quentin and Julia drunk dancing on a constant loop.
- I’m not sure what makes Alice think that she’s safer on her own versus a lamprey, but she needs to get it together and go back to Brakebills.
- Eliot never read Harry Potter? He’s cancelled!
