Supergirl Review: Legion of Superheroes (Season 3 Episode 10)

Reviews, Supergirl

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 10 “Legion of Superheroes” marks the return of the show from its mid-season hiatus. Like most Supergirl episodes these days, “Legion of Superheroes” is filled with both good and bad elements amid some interesting storytelling techniques.

For the majority of “Legion of Superheroes” Kara is trapped within her own brain while her physical self rests in a coma as the result of her fight with Reign.

The lesson that Kara learns in this episode is one that she’s been struggling with for the entire season. Kara has been trying to turn off her human side, her emotional side, ever since she sent Mon-El away. But that’s the very thing that keeps her trapped within her own mind for the duration of “Legion of Superheroes.”

Kara is granted freedom from her mind prison when she is told by Brainiac 5 that Alex said that Kara Danvers is her favorite person. Hopefully, this shift is indicative of the rest of the season.

Supergirl is at its best when Kara embraces all the parts of herself and embraces her vulnerability. Cat told Kara before she left again at the end of Season 2 that vulnerability was one her greatest strengths.

Cat: The thing that makes women strong is that we have the guts to be vulnerable. We have the ability to feel the depths of our emotion, and we know that we will walk through it to the other side.

Unfortunately, it’s seemed like that advice went right through Kara’s head since the start of Season 3. I would love for this moment, with Alex reminding Kara of who she really is, to mark a turning point in Kara where she does go back to embracing that soft, human part of herself.

Though this story plays like the B or even C story of Supergirl it still feels like the most meaningful.

Back at the DEO Alex and Jonn are struggling to make sure Kara is okay, while also dealing with the crisis that Reign has created in National City. Reign has declared herself an enemy of sin, and has decided that all of the people of National City sinners.

The best moment of this episode comes when Alex and Jonn sneak attack Reign by luring her out to a fake bank heist. Though they are ultimately unsuccessful in their attempt to capture her, it’s great to see Alex getting to be in the action of the episode.

Alex: Don’t underestimate Supergirl.

All too often Alex has been sidelined during Season 3, so it’s really satisfying to see her take on Reign this week. It’s less great that doing so causes her to break her leg, because that feels like another opportunity for Supergirl to take her back out of the action.

The Legion of Superheroes, drags their feet on fighting Reign because they have to live in order to save the future and complete their mission. Ultimately, they decide to do the right thing and pitch in.

While they make for a cool fight scene, this plot feels extremely irrelevant. Supergirl should be Kara’s show at all times, bringing on an entire new legion of superheroes takes away from that and clutters the show in a really uncomfortable way.

I’m looking forward to the resolution of this plot so that Supergirl can get back to actually being super.

OTHER THOUGHTS:

  • How did Mon-El teach the legion everything they know about Earth when he only spent a few months there himself? He never even found out how Romeo and Juliet ended.
  • James’ awkwardness is because he can’t tell Lena that Kara and Supergirl are the same person, I’m looking forward to her learning the actual truth.
  • The story about Kara’s childhood cat is really sweet.
  • Can everyone stop breaking holes in the CatCo building? How is that place even still standing?
  • Jonn pretending to be Kara is an amusing scene, but are we really supposed to believe Lena is dumb enough to buy that flimsy imitation hook line and sinker?
