Supergirl Review: Reign (Season 3 Episode 9)

Reviews, Supergirl

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 9, “Reign,” definitely holds up as a solid mid-season finale.

With action, drama, and multiple cliffhangers, “Reign” definitely leaves the audience wanting to know what will happen next.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS NO MORE LOVE TRIANGLES

It’s Christmas time on Supergirl, but this holiday isn’t very merry. “Reign” jumps right back into the regular plot following Season 3 Episode 7, most likely for those who skip crossover events.

So Kara is now faced with seeing Mon-El and his beautiful, lovely wife wherever she goes. This plotline is so cringe-worthy it’s difficult to watch. From the overly cheesy barbecue gag, to Mon-El’s half baked apologies the whole thing is just bad television.

With Mon-El clearly having moved on, having him around is clearly just a Supergirl plot device to torture Kara. If after her near death experience he comes running back to be with her, then it’ll reveal a gross mistreatment of women in the Supergirl as they’ll have only written in Emra to serve as a plot device to Kara and Mon-El’s relationship.

I’d like to think that Supergirl is the feminist unicorn it appeared to be during season 1 and parts of season 2, but no matter how many female friends she now has, putting her through a love triangle is tired and offensive.

Speaking of her female friends, Kara’s heartfelt words to Lena and Samantha are great, but they’re also a lie. Did the whole show get amnesia or were Kara, James, and Winn not the superfriends?

It’s great that Kara has a lady squad now, it’s something the show needed after Cat and Lucy left especially. But saying that Kara’s never had best friends before rings a little sexist and a lot like a retcon to me.

SAMANTHA THE RED EYED REIGN-DEAR

Reign has arrived as exemplified by the episode title, but I think the only person not aware of her is Samantha herself. There appears to be a very clear dichotomy between the character we’ve grown to like and the new villain trying to destroy the world.

Reign can hear and see through Samantha, gaining knowledge that leads her to her next targets, but Samantha doesn’t seem to remember much of her time as Reign if any.

Samantha: I’m your mom, I know everything. Did you know that it means stronger together? We are, always. I love you so much.

Ruby: I love you too, mom.

Because Ruby was never supposed to exist, I’d really like to see the mom in Samantha fight against the “world-killer” inside of her in order to protect her daughter and the world they call home. Better yet, I’d love to see Ruby help to rescue her mother from the monster she’s been turned into.

Samantha’s new powers give her strength that is matched to Kara’s, but apparently stronger than any opponent she’s faced before. Reign is strong enough to bring Kara to the brink of life. Of course, the show can’t go on without Kara but seeing her so broken down is definitely a kick in the heart.

OTHER THOUGHTS:

  • The first half of the Supergirl vs. Reign battle is a little excessive with the extended fight at the random office Christmas party. Once they get into the street however it becomes nothing short of epic.
  • Do you think Kara will be alright? How will she come through this?
  • That last second turn around from Samantha to Ruby has to be a fakeout.
  • Is Edge just a red herring? Or does he actually have a purpose this season at all?
  • Jonn’s dad is right, hot chocolate is the far superior brown water.
  • Winn’s Star Wars jokes continue to be a delight.
  • Does Kara personally pay for all the damages she does to CatCo?
  • I miss the days when Alex’s storyline was more than mentioning Maggie and showing up as background support for Kara on occasion.
  • I miss Cat Grant.

Samantha (she/her) is a social media specialist by day and a sci-fi junkie by night. As a freelance writer and podcaster, she also enjoys live-tweeting, blogging, good music, and better television. Her current favorite television shows include Star Trek (yes, all of them), Riverdale, and Stranger Things and there will always be a place in her heart for Battlestar Galactica, Leverage, and The West Wing.
