21 Memorable TV Moments from 2017
7. Losing Custody of Louie (Chicago Fire)

We’ve seen Dawson and Casey go through it all. However, in Chicago Fire Season 5 we thought they were finally completely happy, but their happiness was thwarted by the return of their foster son’s father. This event killed me because I knew it was killing Gabby and Matt, even if they didn’t always show it.

8. Jules confronts Nate (Sweet/Vicious)
The most memorable TV moment for me is from Sweet/Vicious when Jules finally confronts Nate about what he did and sets the record straight.
It’s something that viewers of the show looked forward to from the beginning of the season and to see Jules finally gather the strength to confront her rapist made for a moment that I’ll never forget. Sweet/Vicious was, and continues to be, an outstanding show that deserves to see airtime still.

9. “I’d do a lot of things to you.” (Wynonna Earp)
One minor line on Wynonna Earp Season 2 Episode 11 had a huge impact for queer representation in the fantasy genre. Nicole Haught and Waverly Earp prove that their love knows no bounds or universe. During this alternate universe episode, we all fell in love again with the couple, and there was one scene in particular that had me at the edge of my seat.
Outside of straight couples, there aren’t many LGBTQ characters or couples that are so blunt about their desire, but Emily Andras has never shied away from breaking down barriers. In this scene, Waverly and Nicole are talking about tracking down a person of interest and breaking the law. Waverly is surprised that Nicole would do that for her, and Nicole is quick to reply “I’d do a lot of things to you.”
We are used to hearing those types of lines from straight couples, so it probably didn’t phase most… but watching a scandalous suggestive moment on a fantasy show, which is airing on a major network, is a substantial thing for a queer couple and great example of why positive representation matters.

10. One Day at a Time
While Elena coming out to her mom Penelope was a heartfelt moment, to me it was the after conversation between Penelope and her mom, Lydia, that had the biggest “wow” moment. Many of us in the LGBTQ community have been in Elena’s shoes, but for the first time we got a closer look to see how the family responds in a coming out story.
On One Day at a Time Season 1 Episode 11, Elena comes out to Lydia (her abuelita), and at first Lydia reacts as if she is fine with it. When Elena leaves the room, Lydia makes it very clear to Penelope she is not okay with this. Then, within a span of about 15 seconds, she talks about how God doesn’t make mistakes and the pope has said not to judge, and then she simply says “I’m good.”
While many have had a very different experience coming out to their family, I think Gloria Calderon-Kellett and Mike Royce did such an authentic and fantastic job writing something so complicated and turned it into a simplistic and hopeful conversation that will help future LGBTQ teens and their families.

11. Game of Thrones

My most memorable moment was Olenna Tyrell losing to the Lannisters but still going out like a boss on Game of Thrones. I love that she waits until after accepting the poison from Jaime to get in the last word as she confesses to killing Joffrey. It is the perfect send-off for her character, plus all the memes it inspired are hilarious.

12. Timeless is un-cancelled!

I was literally jumping for joy in 2017 when one of my favorite new shows, Timeless, was UN-CANCELED! I participated in the fan campaign to get the show back, and it was incredibly exciting and gratifying to be heard and have a network take back its cancellation.
Timeless is a fun, engaging, educational and diversely-cast show that people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy together. My other favorite new shows, Pitch and Sweet/Vicious, were canceled permanently and Timeless doing some TV time travel to be revived was exactly what I needed. I can’t imagine another moment like that coming around any time soon.
