16 Noteworthy New TV Shows from 2017
13. The Bold Type

Another show that was all about women being fiercely independent is The Bold Type on Freeform. While this season had many contenders for strong female stories, none are quite like The Bold Type.
This show centers on three women who work for Scarlet Magazine in NYC. They are all go-getters and two of the three have even worked their way up from assistants to full-time writing positions.
This is the inspiration all women need in a show. No longer are women being cast as the underlings, the low man on the totem pole. In The Bold Type the women run the show, literally. The editor of Scarlet Magazine is also a strong, independent female.
14. Young Sheldon

Fans of The Big Bang Theory were on board for a Sheldon spinoff. This cute and fun prequel to the show we’ve come to know and love over the years is just what this season needed to round it out.
Young Sheldon focuses on the childhood of Sheldon Cooper and how he became the scientist we know today.
Played by Big Little Lies’ Iain Armitage, young Sheldon is a fantastic parallel of adult Sheldon. It’s nice to get a glimpse into the world and family that made him who he is. Iain is the perfect combination of charming and cute, and he could even pass as Jim’s younger brother.
In a sea of darker, more serious content this season, Young Sheldon shines bright as a beacon of hope and humor.
15. Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies wove together the stories of three first-grade moms in Monterey, California. The close friendship of Madeline, Celeste and Jane was the focus of the show that also explored topics like divorce, infidelity, domestic abuse and rape.
The central mystery keeps viewers suspended until the very end and the HBO Drama also featured strong performances by Alexander Skarsgard, Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Reese Witherspoon.
16. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
From Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel follows Midge Maisel as she begins to pursue a career in comedy after her husband leaves her for another woman.
The Amazon original series is set in the 1960s, and it provides a commentary on the expectations placed on women at the time. Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein showcase their talents on this boldly funny, smart series.
