The Good Place Review: Existential Crisis (Season 2 Episode 5)

Reviews, The Good Place

The Good Place Season 2 Episode 5, “Existential Crisis,” continues with the grade A comedy, meanwhile furthering my dislike for Jason’s character.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a character that I absolutely cannot stand, but Jason has rekindled the fire of dislike inside my cold heart.

If Jason were actually funny and had a storyline besides being the resident dumb character on the show, it would be different, but that’s all he is to me.

Occasionally Jason will make a real, funny comment, but that hasn’t happened yet this season, and it only makes me wonder why he’s even here. Jason could disappear, and absolutely nothing would change. He holds no real value to the show.

I know that Jason and Tahani sleeping together is a possible start to a new storyline for Jason, but I don’t want it. I feel like that situation only happened because there was nowhere else for his character to go. Jason and Tahani are nowhere near a match – I would say “maybe in hell,” but technically that’s where they’re at.

Jason and Tahani is a no-go from me. It doesn’t matter that he cheered a sad Tahani up if that’s all you can do in a matter of five episodes you mean nothing to me.

Tahani continues to climb the ladder on my favorite characters list for The Good Place. Besides sleeping with Jason, I’ve enjoyed her immensely this season.

I love her determination to try and out-do Vicky on the party planning. Tahani was obviously never going to beat Vicky, but it’s the fact that she put her everything into planning the best party she’s ever thrown all to try and upstage Vicky. It’s petty, but I can relate.

Eleanor’s reinvention this season is fantastic. She is actively trying to do the right thing, doesn’t complain like her old self, and is overall a much better person. If only she could have made this change in her life while she was still alive.

I thoroughly enjoyed Michael having his little episode, but I wish it would have lasted longer. Michael completely lost his mind and pulled Janet into it with him; His cover with Vicky was almost blown due to this behavior which is why I think it would have been better to have his breakdown last a few episodes.

Heck, it could have only lasted until mid-way through episode six as long as it continued and didn’t resolve itself all in one episode.

Other Thoughts:

  • Past!Eleanor losing her mind over a family toothbrush holder is pure comedy gold. Kristen Bell continues to kill it.
  • I can’t believe Michael pierced his ear and got a Japanese tattoo all for one episode.
  • I still want to see the version where Tahani and Eleanor are soulmates.

Favorite Quotes:

  • “A millennial is someone who’s only been torturing people for a thousand years. Millennial.” – Michael
  • “I used to think about how it’s weird they don’t make pants with just one big pant leg for both your legs.” – Eleanor
  • “Can I get you a snack? Do you eat? I can never remember. What do you eat? Babies? You want me to get you a big fat baby? What flavor baby? Ooh, how about a cool ranch baby?” – Eleanor
