American Horror Story: Cult Review: Winter of Our Discontent (Season 7 Episode 8)
American Horror Story: Cult Season 7 Episode 8, “Winter of Our Discontent,” dives into the past of detective Samuels and sets things straight when it comes to Rudy’s involvement with Kai’s plans.
I was almost positive that Rudy was in on Kai’s plan and was actively helping him, but boy was I wrong. It doesn’t shock me that Rudy and Kai don’t have the best relationship because Rudy is noticeably older than Kai and most likely was not there a whole lot while Kai was growing up. Therefore, their relationship is always a brotherly love, but they never had that chance to connect like Kai and Winter had.

I’m not going to lie; I have no idea what Ally could be up to by joining the cult. At first, I thought that Ally is only telling Kai the truth about Rudy’s plans because she and Rudy have a secret plan for themselves, but I guess Ally has indeed lost her mind.
I don’t see any other reason why Ally would out Rudy to his brother to be murdered and join the clique that has been successfully torturing her for quite some time.
Now that I know Rudy was never in on Kai’s plans it’s sad to see him be murdered when all he was trying to do was save Ally. He knew his brother was crazy and knew that Ally would need some help, but Ally has to do what she does best and go overboard.

Detective Samuels backstory is boring and uneventful. Samuels was a sex hungry, bad cop who couldn’t figure out his own sexuality. Hell, he continues to deny the fact that he’s gay even when Winter calls him gay.
Seriously, besides being man candy for Harrison Samuels is nothing and his death means absolutely nothing. His death, however, makes me fall even more in love with Winter as she pulls that trigger and ends his life after he attempts to rape her.
Another factor that plays into my hatred for detective Samuels might be the fact that I can’t stand Colton Haynes face when he’s even remotely angry. It’s the same face no matter what character he plays, and it’s something that I can never overlook.
The threesome scene with Kai, Winter, and Samuels is so disturbingly weird. There’s no other way to put it. It’s not anything other than a bizarre situation that somehow feels like rape. I know Kai is insane, but this is a little too far, especially for him.
One thing that does confuse me is why Winter, Ivy, and Beverly are still working for Kai after killing Harrison and Beverly taunting Kai on live television. What happened afterward? Nothing?
With three more episodes left in the season, I’m curious to see how things fall in the end with Ally joining the cult.
Other Thoughts:
- Ivy’s face when she sees Ally take the clown mask off is everything and more.
- I don’t see Beverly making it to the end of the season alive, which is surprising because I figured she would’ve overthrown Kai by now.
- Winters face at Samuel during the threesome scene is pure gold.
