The Last Ship Review: Feast (Season 4 Episode 7)
The mad scientist Peter Vellek is madder than we could have imagined.
On The Last Ship Season 4 Episode 7, “Feast,” we find out more details about what Dr. Vellek has been up to, including his motive for orchestrating those brutal fights.
This is a man who not only wants to be able to increase the world’s food supply, but he wants to be able to control it. What better way to do that to than to control the people?
He’s managed to take the “nostos” we’ve learned about all season — and that Slattery experienced the effects of first hand — and make it into something far more potent. Now, it’s a drug that will make even the most aggressive man completely docile. He’s creating sheep. He’s creating people who will just accept what’s given to them without asking for more or questioning anything.

Those fights? They weren’t just for entertainment. They were to find the most aggressive men. Tom Chandler? He’s one of those men.
The score Vellek gives “Hercules” is higher than many of the other men. We see that in the notebook, but Giorgio reveals it as well. He describes how Chandler nearly beat a man to death, and it’s clear the others are surprised. This is Chandler’s dark secret, after all.
Giorgio: You didn’t tell them? Oh… Got demons, much?
Chandler is ashamed, though. When he sees himself on video, beating a man with no mercy, he hangs his head in shame. This isn’t who he wants to be, and the fact that he’s back on the Nathan James is proof of that.
Giorgio, by the way, has his own problems. He’s not the worst villain we have to contend with, and in fact, he’s one now that I can’t help but feeling a little sorry for.

He’s disrespected by his own father, who is much more interested in working with his other son. His primary motivation is to get his father’s approval, and it seems like that’s going to be impossible to attain.
I half expected Giorgio to turn on his family and align himself with Chandler before this episode was over. After all, it turns out they have a common enemy by the name of Omar, who *surprise* is still alive after being shot by Giorgio.
Everything comes together at the worst possible time, though. After being slighted by his father Giorgio decides it’s a good time to throw a house party, and that’s exactly when Vulture team shows up in the first place. That’s definitely not how they planned that mission to go down, but that’s only one wrinkle in their plan.

Azima lures Giorgio away (ya’ll, how amazing is Azima?), and the team gets the key to his father’s study, but as they’re looking for clues, they hear the gunfire. Omar and his men are back, and they’re on a rampage.
Unfortunately, Giorgio gets away in the middle of all of it, but the team gets the information they need to find Vellek’s lab. Only to make matters more complicated (and yet also pretty appropriate) that lab isn’t on land. It’s on a ship.
Other thoughts:
- There are some really funny moments on this episode, from Burke’s “Oh, we got quarrel with you! We got MAD quarrel with you” to Miller’s comment about the techno music killing them all before anything else does.
- Wolf’s crush on Azima is cute. Hoping we’ll continue to see more interaction between those two.
- Kathleen appears to have her own crush as well. What a sweet moment. I wonder what her father would have thought about this.
- Master Chief is obviously not okay, and I’m worried about it.
