The Last Ship Review: Bread and Circuses (Season 4 Episode 3)
No, Tom. You really can’t escape your destiny.
On The Last Ship Season 4 Episode 3, “Bread and Circuses,” Chandler is reunited with the crew and seamlessly works alongside them to secure the seeds.
It’s always inspiring to watch this team work together, and even without Chandler as their leader, they prove what an incredible force they are together. Slattery has clearly done a good a job of filling Chandler’s shoes, and Sasha Cooper continues to prove herself to be a total badass.
Her quick thinking and fearlessness is why the crew is able to track Omar to Sardinia, and in the process, to get some help from their estranged former captain.

Even before they reunite, and before Tom knows about the seeds, he’s focused on figuring out what Giorgio and Lucia are up to. He slips Lucia’s necklace off as she sleeps, and uses it to let himself into Giorgio’s office — but not before running into an only slightly suspicious Giorgio, who tells Chandler that he is “the bread of life” and that he has big plans for Chandler later.
That’s not foreboding at all, right?
The “bread of life” bit, we realize, has everything to do with the seeds. What he’s hiding in his office seems to be plans for those seeds, which he’s willing to pay Omar a large amount of money for.
Chandler is smart enough to play along with Giorgio, to be silent as he talks with Omar, and to remain as anonymous as possible. He also suggests to Giorgio that perhaps he shouldn’t pay Omar until he knows for sure that Omar has actually brought the seeds.

Georgio has a certain respect for Chandler — so he listens to reason. While they wait on the seeds to be brought over, Giorgio invites Omar to see a fight.
Is there a better nickname for Chandler than Hercules?
It’s so interesting how Chandler has changed since his time on the James. His spirit is broken in such a way that he doesn’t care if he has to fight. I’m not sure if he even cares whether he lives or dies.
Dr. Vellek: You seem pretty calm for a man facing death.
Chandler: I’ve faced worse.
It’s when Chandler is ready to fight that his crew spots him — Sasha notices him first, and then Slattery.

Slattery: Of all the gin joints in all the towns.
You knew what was going to happen next, right? There’s nothing quite like watching Slattery and Chandler back together, sharing a secret and punching each other as Chandler tells Slattery where he can find the seeds.
Slattery has some animosity toward his friend and also throws him one punch that he says is “for her” pointing him to Sasha. Chandler did abandon his crew — but at that point, he had to.
Chandler uses his position among Giorgio’s people to help the crew, and it’s almost a perfect win. It’s also all one hell of a reunion — and though some of it seems just a little convenient, it’s emotional to watch even through the gunfire.
It seems like they’ve got it under control when Chandler takes the seeds from Lucia, and they’re all ready to head back to the ship. But when Slattery is left alone with Lucia, with intentions of taking her back to their ship, she stabs him and runs away.
To make matters worse, Slattery loses his gun, and now he’s alone in unfamiliar territory. Oh, and he’s now the one with the seeds.
