The Bold Type Photo Preview: Free The Nipple (Season 1 Episode 6)

On The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 6, “The Breast Issue,” the young women come up against their individual battles, but this time, it’s closer to the heart than usual. Literally.

I couldn’t be any more excited for this episode, because they’ll talk about serious health issues specific to women. Jane undergoes BCRA gene testing to figure out if there have been any mutations to her BCRA1 and BCRA2 genes. If so, she might have a higher possibility of getting breast and/or ovarian cancer.

These are grave issues for women because it affects more of us than anyone realizes. According to The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance, over 22,000 women get diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year. Additionally, the breast cancer statistics from BreastCancer.org show that 40,610 women are expected to die from breast cancer in 2017.

It’s great that The Bold Type has dedicated an entire arc to getting tested for these virulent diseases.

While Jane explores the health aspect of our breasts, Kat experiences nipple activism resistance from Scarlet magazine. Amazingly, this is the first time Jacqueline has told one of the girls to not to make the bold move in getting a story.

However, “it’s too risky” is not a warning Kat usually heads. I’m sure she will find out some way to get around Scarlet’s restrictions and truly expose the laws that sexualize women, then punish them for their sexualization by restricting them in ways they don’t restrict our male counterparts.

The #freethenipple movement has become big news lately with stars posting their own support for the liberation of women’s bodies from over-sexualization and public breastfeeding.

Interestingly enough, Sutton’s story doesn’t seem to fall in with the episodic theme of breasts. Initially, I assumed she would come across sexism in her new job. However,”The Breast Issue,” plans to continue unfolding her efforts to prove she deserves to be in the fashion industry.

I have to say, I love how Sutton’s struggle has been explored on multiple episodes. It shows us development, growth, and it’s so thorough. Not only had her professional career gotten this same attention, but so has her romantic life.

We see her and Richard’s relationship progress, but we also see Alex, the underdog, and Sutton’s friendship grow into something beyond platonic.

The promotional video shows this episode will be equal parts seriousness, laughter, liberation, and empowerment. If these issues are explored just as well as they were on the last episode, The Bold Type will definitely hit another home-run episode.

Episode Description: In promoting Scarlet’s breast health awareness campaign, Kat tries to be bold with her message, but is left wondering whether her competitive nature is hurting her cause. Jane confronts past issues and current anxieties when she is tasked with writing a controversial piece about BRCA gene testing. Sutton is determined to excel at her tasks at hand, but when things fall apart, it’s Alex who rushes to her rescue.
