Shadowhunters Review: Hail and Farewell (Season 2 Episode 19)
Jonathan and Valentine come face to face with the Institute on Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 19, “Hail and Farewell.”

EMERAUDE TOUBIA
It’s no shocker that the star of the episode is Izzy. From the way she takes charge in the beginning while going after Jonathan, her and Clary fighting alongside each other, and her finally getting the revenge on Jonathan that she deserves.
Izzy and Clary teaming up against the forsaken is what I’m here for. Anytime there’s a chance to have badass women showing their skills I am down for. Girl power all the way!
I especially love when she has a chance to get her revenge on Jonathan. It’s Jace that actually kills him, but Izzy’s the one who gets to let out all of her pent-up frustration towards the man that used and abused her and her family.
I think that Jonathan’s death is justified for the storyline, but at the same time, I don’t think he’s dead. Besides Izzy making her way down the bridge with her whip I thought that it was a little too anticlimactic.

Don’t take me the wrong way, Jonathan and Jace’s fight is emotional and riveting, but I don’t think that it is big enough to be his actual death. There are always twist and turns in the finale, and I’m betting that Valentine makes a deal with the Seelie Queen to bring him back.
Speaking of the Seelie Queen, she’s obviously a psychopath so I am a little confused as to why Magnus would continue to back her. I can understand where Luke and Raphael base their decisions because of Magnus’ stance.
I’ve always felt that the Seelie Queen is shady on the down low and she just proves my initial thoughts of her by entertaining Valentine and capturing Maia all because Simon refused her twice. Simon is right; rejection is going to be coming from everywhere if you’re trying to speak for the downworld.
The only good thing about Maia being captured is that since Alisha Wainwright was promoted as a series regular for Season 3, we don’t have to worry about Maia dying. I’m nowhere near ready to say goodbye to Maia, especially now that she and Simon have defined their relationship.
Maia and Simon are still the cutest couple, alongside Magnus and Alec.
The only downside to Maia being, basically, confirmed not to die is Luke would be the next target I think could get the ax. And I don’t believe that it’s just a convenience that we haven’t seen Luke’s partner again since she had valid proof of him being a werewolf.
I think that she’s going to show up somewhere near the middle of the finale and Luke’s is going to end up dying because he’s trying to save her. I hope that it doesn’t come true, but I feel like it could.
As far as Jace and Clary, I’m sort of upset with myself because I’m finally starting to like them as a couple. I feel like they’ve grown closer by all the hands they kept getting dealt in life, and now they only have each other that they depend on.
Their scene when tracking Jonathan is one of the most aesthetically pleasing scenes we’ve gotten in quite a while.
I’m genuinely curious as to what the season finale holds for us.

Other Thoughts:
- I love how well Clary and Alec fight together now. A season ago, Alec wouldn’t of wanted Clary there fighting with him. Now he knows that he can depend on her.
- Simon standing up to the Seelie Queen is yet another testimony for how brave and amazing he is.
- I don’t want Raphael and Izzy to try to get back together anytime soon. I want Izzy to stay single and get her life back on track.
