Killjoys Review: Reckoning Ball (Season 3 Episode 9)

Killjoys, Reviews

On Killjoys Season 3 Episode 9, “Reckoning Ball,” everyone makes amends and says their peace before heading off to war. It’s a nice way to show how people are preparing for this war because, as we unfortunately learn, the end is coming for a lot of people, including those we love.

The best part of reckoning night is that it doesn’t overstay its welcome. It’s a thread weaving through the episode, popping up briefly before disappearing again.

Delle Seyah: It’s hard to love something and then to lose it. I get that now.

Johnny: I’ll never forgive you.

Delle Seyah: I wouldn’t respect you if you did.

Delle Seyah and Johnny have such a strange dynamic. It’s so wonderful to watch. You never know how they are going to act around each other. It’s almost like they respect yet hate each other at the same time.

It’s difficult to trust anything that comes out of Delle Seyah’s mouth. There’s something about her that makes you second guess everything she claims to be true, like how she requested the parley to learn more about the baby she’s carrying.

This makes everything a lot more interesting because there’s a nagging feeling in the back of your mind going, “something is wrong.” It all makes sense once Aneela shows up in the Quad, dressed as Dutch, and killing our Alvis (so not okay with this).

Aneela’s plan all along is distraction, and man does it work.

Aneela: A long time ago, the Devil came to the Quad. The only way to reveal her was with the cut of a blade.

As much as I’m ready for this war to happen, I also don’t want it to end. I’ll miss Aneela’s storytelling. She’s got quite a way with words. Any theories on who is going to make it out alive, and how this whole thing will end?

Okay, here’s the issue with Johnny learning Dutch’s plan — he doesn’t make a big deal about it. There are no tears, no arguing, nothing. It’s practically a non-issue.

Dutch’s whole reason for not telling Johnny was that she believed he would not let her go through with it. She thought the conversation would be difficult, emotional, and painful. Honestly, I got the feeling that Dutch thought Johnny might take drastic measures to ensure her safety, like locking her in the brig or something.

Johnny finds out in a conversation that appears to take like five seconds, and he doesn’t even bat an eye. There’s no reaction.

Yeah, he’s still going to try to save Dutch, but there’s no fight, no tears, nothing. All this build up was for nothing.

I don’t know about you, but I was starting to mentally prepare for heartbreaking Johnny and Dutch scene, and I was craving it. But no, it’s a quick, “we’ve got your back,” moment, and it’s time to move on.

When Johnny tells Delle Seyah that Dutch’s DNA is a mirror image of Aneela’s, you think he’s going to show his pain on his face or that we would have maybe seen the moment where Johnny figures it out, and his heart breaks.

Nope, we get absolutely nothing from Johnny, which makes it appear like he doesn’t care, which we all know isn’t true.

Johnny and Dutch have a wonderful relationship, and the reveal of Dutch’s plan was teased to be this emotional moment between the two, but it never happens, and I’m not okay with that. Are you?

D’av: Standing there bleeding like you’re some kind of martyr like the whole universe rests on your shoulders. Well, it doesn’t. You’re not some special snowflake. You know you’re not even a a very good Killjoy. You never follow orders. You drink too much. You sleep with all the wrong guys.

Dutch: I’m going to miss our little talks. I’m going to miss John’s stupid in-jokes with Lucy. I’m going to miss that time when John was gone, and it was just me and you, kicking Hullen ass and drinking too much and sleeping with the wrong people.
