Killjoys Review: Boondoggie (Season 3 Episode 1)
On Killjoys Season 3 Episode 1, “Boondoggie,” the team is still separated, sadly. Johnny is off searching for Clara, while Dutch and D’avin are fighting the Hullen fight.
Johnny and Dutch have left messages for each other, or maybe it’s just one message from when Johnny first left. Watching Johnny and Dutch replay old messages, holding conversations with the hologram of the other, is absolutely heartbreaking.
What’s worse is they are lying to each other.
Johnny hasn’t told Dutch about Clara going missing, and Dutch is keeping secrets from Johnny. They are trying to support the other — Johnny does not want Dutch to worry about him, and Dutch does not want Johnny to abandon his mission because she needs help.

It’s sweet that Dutch and Johnny are trying not to worry each other, but the lies are making me worry about both of them. Hopefully, things do not get too dire before one of them reaches out for help.
You know what else is not helping the Dutch and Johnny pain? Ollie asking a bunch of questions about Johnny’s relationship with Dutch, and Pippin reminding Dutch of Johnny.
Dutch: Look I am going to tell you something I told him back then. Whatever I get you into, if you trust me, I promise I’ll get you out safe, okay?
Dutch and Johnny have always been an unstoppable pair. Before D’av came along, it was just the two of them, so Dutch and Johnny don’t really seem whole without the other.
We already know that Dutch and D’av make a great team, but we get to see Johnny start to form a new partnership with Ollie.
I don’t know about you, but as I settled in for this premiere, I was ready to watch some amazing Clara and Johnny scenes. When Ollie appears with Alice instead of Clara, there is a twinge of disappointment along with the “wait, why do you have Alice” confusion.
Within minutes, that disappointment is gone because Ollie is an absolutely phenomenal character. Her sass is amazing, and she is a good fit, not only for the show, but for Johnny.
Ollie: Goodnight, Johnny basic.
Johnny: Goodnight small, complicated lady whose name I should know.
Ollie gets Johnny to open up and share what’s eating at him, and she also provides crucial insight into the hackmod world.
It’s always fascinating to learn more about the world Killjoys inhabits, and learning about the hackmods is no exception. From the different classes of hackmods to social interactions, the hackmods are a rich new facet of this world to explore.
As much as I love Clara, the initial hunt for her does not draw me in. It’s just not intriguing, especially when Dutch and D’av’s new ragtag team is out hunting Hullen.

Then, a twist kicks in.
A hackmods attacks Ollie, telling her to stop looking into Clara’s disappearance. The thing is, the hackmod isn’t a normal hackmod. He is a Hullen posing as a hackmod…I think.
It’s a little unclear what the hells is going on with that guy, but the sight of the green plasma suddenly makes Johnny’s search for Clara a lot more exciting. Eventually, it will tie into Dutch and D’av’s mission, and I cannot wait for that moment.
Speaking of Dutch and D’av’s mission, the whole thing is proof that you do not mess with Dutch.
She is not only a badass warrior, but she is a brilliant strategist. She sets up an amazing trap for the Hullen, and it works perfectly. I feel like we have not really gotten to see this side of Dutch before, which is a shame.

Does anyone else find it interesting that she referred to herself as the monster and the Hullen as the heroes? It’s a small moment, but it’s an interesting glimpse into how Dutch views herself.
Of course, she could also just called herself a monster because it made for a fun twist in the story she was telling. I really want her to read me a bedtime story every night now.
Dutch: I am starting a war here, not a bloody book club for people who don’t read.

I was also disappointed that Clara wasn’t in the episode. Sure, Ollie was great and all, but I was hoping we’d get to see some of Johnny and Clara’s adventures. I wonder if Stephanie Leonidas just wasn’t available this season? Fun episode overall, but 302 is the best!
I am glad I wasn’t the only one upset by her absence. I think it might be a scheduling issue 🙁
