Mary Kills People Review: Raised by Wolves (Season 1 Episode 4)

Mary Kills People, Reviews

On Mary Kills People Season 1 Episode 4, “Raised by Wolves,” Mary and Des receive offers that might jeopardize their business and partnership for good.

Mary was making the bad decisions on Mary Kills People Season 1 Episode 3, “Wave the White Flag,” and on this episode, Des follows suit.

While Mary’s recklessness created anxious suspense (and continues to do so in this episode), Des’ situation just breaks my heart.

Des: When two bucks fight sometimes they get their antlers locked together. They can’t unlock them, and they can’t live like that, so they both just die, locked together. Point being if they lock antlers, they’re both going down.

Mary “locked antlers” with Des on Mary Kills People Season 1 Episode 3, and as hard as he tries to fight it, Des may be the one to bring them both down.

Mary’s accusations and subsequent (possibly unintentional) freeze out causes Des to spiral, adding to this mix is Frank and his unethical police tactics. Things don’t bode well for Des and his addict mindset.

Des makes a valiant effort, but the odds are stacked against him. Missed phone calls between Des and Mary complicate things further. If they just would’ve been able to connect, they could’ve joined forces again and fought as a united front.

I don’t think Ben and Frank’s plan was to divide and conquer, but that is just what they do. By working on breaking them individually, Ben gets promising leads, and Frank cracks Des’ resolve.

Both Ben and Frank use some really questionable methods in their detective work, so much of this has to be illegal. It’s kind of driving me crazy. If this case ever did go to trial, wouldn’t most of this stuff be inadmissible?

Guess that would depend on how good their lawyer is, and apparently she is very good. She also happens to be Mary’s ex-husband’s girlfriend. This is a somewhat implausible but rather interesting plot twist.

From the beginning, there have been so many things at play in this story about Mary and her business, and the surprises keep coming.

Some of those surprises are about Mary’s past. We get to meet Mary’s sister, Nicole, and learn about their mother’s death. Well, we don’t so much as learn about it, as we hear vague bits and pieces that may or may not be true.

I like this introduction of Mary’s sister. It’s a good way to get some of that important backstory, and she makes for a good confidant for Mary, especially if she is losing Des.

The show likes to keep Mary and her motivations mysterious. I still don’t think there is anything dishonorable behind it, but I quite enjoy these little moments. They are a tad campy, but I like campy, so it works.

It may not add to the suspense, but there is already plenty of suspense to go around. On this episode, things escalate quickly, and it’s making me nervous for the fate of Mary and Des.

Stray Observations:

  • “I kind of get the feeling you’re always working.” I love this mic drop moment.
  • Mary, I believe she wants to help people, but you, you’re not that deep.” How dare you say that about my precious Des! He is super deep! Have you seen his tattoo? This Frank character has no redeeming qualities.
  • I don’t think I’m a very good person.” “Why? Because you provide a service and people pay for it?” “Because I like it. It’s hard to explain, but there’s something about being with them in their last moments when everything matters; doesn’t matter. I don’t want to stop. I think there is something wrong with me. Am I crazy like mom?” Caroline Dhavernas is heartbreakingly good here.
