Blindspot Review: In Words, Drown I (Season 2 Episode 20)
With three episodes left in the season, Blindspot delivers a lukewarm episode that leaves us asking: What was that about Weller being a threat? While enjoyable to watch, Blindspot Season 2 Episode 20 “In Words, Drown I,” feels like filler when you consider all the progress made in recent episodes towards Sandstorm.
First, I have to give Blindspot props for faking us out regarding Zapata’s arrest. I truly thought it had to do with the missing knife from evidence, but then they reveal through a flashback that Zapata volunteered to enter prison to get close to Devon (Rhonda Rousey)
So Zapata isn’t awaiting trial, she’s just chasing a Sandstorm lead, but she’s so convincing and well timed that it really does fool me until the reveal.

This week’s case is fun to watch, but overall a little unoriginal. Rhonda Rousey plays off Audrey Esparza really well in their scenes together. The breakout sequence is particularly engaging, but I fail to see what that accomplishes with Phase II and Shepherd on the loose.
It feels like the time for chasing an asset like this, passed long ago.
It also doesn’t build on the cliffhanger from Blindspot Season 2 Episode 19 “Regard a Mere Mad Rager?” I am not exactly seeing an imminent threat to Weller’s well-being.
The strong points of the episode are the interpersonal moments that take place between the different Team Weller members.

One standout performance this week is Ashley Johnson as Patterson. It’s no secret that Patterson has been dealing with some very heavy emotional baggage from Borden’s betrayal, her capture, and torture. Finding out she had a bug in her tooth was just the icing on a terrible streak of luck.
The betrayal from someone she loved, and the violation of her body are clearly messing with her head, and I am very glad that Weller noticed her lack of swipes in the keycard log.
It’s hard seeing how much this has affected Patterson, but I am glad the show is not shying away from her grief and mistrust. Patterson is the woman with all the answers, she keeps the gears in the machine running, but when it comes down to it, she’s human.
And I am glad that show is acknowledging that, and giving her a little time to feel her pain. Her session with Dr. Sun seems to have helped her turn a corner, and I look forward to seeing how Patterson copes as the season comes to a close.

We also had a couple of secrets come to the surface, starting with the death of Emma Shaw.
We found out a few episodes ago, that Roman killed Emma Shaw, Taylor’s mother. Emma was an important person to Kurt and Kurt felt betrayed by the news. It would have been easy to have Kurt’s confrontation with Roman end with Kurt turning around and spilling that Jane drugged him, not Shepherd.
Of course, that wouldn’t have been much of a payoff. So whether Kurt is being a bigger man, or this is just an out-of-character slip, I can’t be sure, but when Roman does discover the secret that Jane’s been keeping from her the result is explosive.
The episode ends with Roman attacking Jane. It’ll be an interesting place to pick up next week and I am definitely curious to see where this goes in the final two episodes.
