The Originals Review: I Hear You Knocking (Season 4 Episode 5)
What do you do when the killer you need is changing for the better and leaving his brutal ways behind? Well you bring up his past and exploit his weaknesses, of course!
On The Originals Season 4 Episode 5, “I Hear You Knocking,” the Hollow decides to expose the vulnerabilities of some of the most powerful supernatural creatures as a means to firmly plant itself in our world. It almost succeeded in doing just that.
Klaus has changed. He held on for five years during his imprisonment, barely, because of his daughter, his family, and Camille. The killer inside of him is still there, but it doesn’t guide him anymore. His family does.
The Hollow tries to rip that all away from him by making him fearful that his family will be taken away and that the only way to protect them is by falling into the same loop that he was in during Seasons 1-3.

Too bad for the Hollow that Klaus is stronger now. He’s learned from his mistakes. Sure, he stumbles. Let’s not forget those three innocent victims that ended up being casualties in The Hollow’s plan.
But Klaus is trying to be better. For himself, his daughter, and his family aka the people he’s let down constantly in the past because of his selfish need to keep them safe for himself. Now, he’s keeping them safe simply because he loves them.
Klaus’ refusal to kill Marcel and the way he saw through his faux father’s abusive rants is proof that The Hollow will have a hell of a fight if it continues to come after his family. He’s a changed man and there’s no going back.
Freya, who’s been on this ‘Must Kill Marcel’ initiative, has multiple vulnerabilities like the rest of her siblings, each other. That and her sheltered life via Dahlia’s crazy methods has robbed her of having more intimate vulnerabilities.
That’s where Keelin comes in.
She sees through Freya’s seemingly impenetrable mask. She sees what Freya’s frightened of, how alone she is in this despite being surrounded by family, and how much she needs someone by her side.
Keelin stays because she knows what it is to fight for family and how it changes you. She’s forgiven Freya for the kidnapping, because yes that was messed up, and is taking a chance because she feels something when she looks at Freya.

And Freya, bless her heart, feels it too. When she looks at Keelin she’s afraid. She’s never had this sort of attention, companionship, or vulnerability cross her path. Nevertheless, she’s hesitantly reaching back and opening herself up to Keelin.
The one thing that frightens me about this blossoming relationship is that Keelin will probably die. Not because lesbians being killed on TV is a well-known trope. I think Keelin’s going to die because the Mikaelson’s have the worst luck when it comes to love.
The only reason why Hayley and Elijah have such a strong chance of surviving all of this and building a solid relationship is because they are main characters who are powerful. Keelin isn’t and it breaks my heart to think of Freya possibly falling for someone and losing them.
Either way, having Freya fall for this woman is the representation I’ve been craving for a while on The Originals. We all want to see ourselves represented in the media we consume and this is it for me and other young women immersed in this supernatural world.
Now onto Sofya, aka that vampire with the slicked back hair that I haven’t trusted from the start.
Sofya wants revenge against those that hurt her. It’s still not clear how many people she blames in this revenge plot, besides Klaus, but she didn’t fool me for a second. Even after making it so her hair wasn’t slicked back.

I’m telling you, you can never trust a character with slicked back hair. It’s trouble.
She cares for Marcel but not enough to avoid thrusting him into the middle of her plans. She’s got ambitions and people to kill and it doesn’t matter how many people have to fall into the crosshairs for her to succeed.
Like everyone in New Orleans she doesn’t understand the bond Marcel and Klaus have. Maybe Elijah understands it a bit but no one else, especially Sofya.
When it comes down to it, Marcel and Klaus care for each other. They might fight, lock each other up for years, play dirty, but they care for the other. Right now they’re going through a tough spot but they’ll make it through.
They have time on their side.
Marcel and Klaus are each others’ vulnerabilities and they will protect one another and not let anyone use them against each other. Like they say, family is complicated and this is the craziest one of them all.
