Grey’s Anatomy Review: What’s Inside (Season 13 Episode 19)

Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

When Grey’s Anatomy focuses on friendship and community, that’s when it’s at its best.

The community — the family — that Meredith has managed to create with her friends and her sisters makes Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 19, “What’s Inside,” a particularly satisfying episode.

Maggie is grieving the loss of her mother, and Meredith and Amelia stand by, loyally, taking her to mother’s grave, checking on her when they think she’s taking on the impossible, and dropping everything when she comes home crying.

They may not always get it right, and they may not always understand — as Meredith and Amelia each make clear when they talk about their own destructive ways of dealing with grief, but that’s what makes it even more significant.

And just when Meredith finally decides to give Nathan a chance, she has to send him away so she can be there for Maggie. She doesn’t even think twice about it. What’s more important in that moment is getting Maggie up off the couch and forcing her to dance it out.

Guys, that’s the Grey’s Anatomy I love. Watching the three sisters force themselves to dance until it eventually becomes fun sums it all up.

That sentiment of loyalty and creating your own family has been an important thread since the early days of Grey’s Anatomy, and it’s part of what makes it such a likeable (and clearly, long-lasting) television show. It makes it hopeful, even when it’s not.

Maybe Maggie shouldn’t have taken on that risky surgery on her first day back, but let’s get real — when have you ever seen a surgeon at Grey-Sloan ease back into things?

It becomes an important moment for her, especially when things seem to go south. Despite what looks to everyone else like cause for alarm, Maggie remains still and confident. She uses her own experience of her mother’s death to understand why the baby is in distress, which is exactly why the baby’s mother wanted to keep her on as a surgeon in the first place.

Her intuition is right — the baby’s heart just needed to learn to beat after losing something it was used to being there.

Meanwhile, Cross, the least-known intern at this point, believes there’s something wrong, and Stephanie blows it off. She diagnosis him with a common illness and sends him to surgery, where the doctors learn he has Tuberculosis. Thankfully, it’s not nearly as dire as one might think, but Stephanie and Andrew are still exposed.

It’s a lesson for Stephanie, who doesn’t take Cross seriously when she should. At this point, I know we’re all dying to know just exactly how Jerrika Hinton will leave the show, and I can’t help but think this moment is what might send her in a new direction. She’s been questioning herself more and more lately.

As for the hospital drama, things are dying down. Arizona is still seeing Eliza, and everyone is generally used to her presence. Bailey and The Chief Richard even start to make amends, and Bailey finally admits she was wrong.

It’s a nice moment for Richard when his wisdom is needed over the TB protocol. He’ll always be the chief, no matter who the chief is.

Other thoughts:

  • I feel like a broken record here, but can Alex Karev please get some screen time? Please and thank you.
  • Props to Nathan for still showing up to Meredith’s door after Arizona spooks him by talking about how perfect Derek was.
  • I’m starting to give up on Owen and Amelia. Anyone else?
  • Jackson for the win. Bringing those medical records and the amazing photos of Diane is just what Maggie needed.
