The Originals Review: No Quarter (Season 4 Episode 2)
Klaus Mikaelson has been freed from his captor and war shall rain on Marcel’s head and the streets of New Orleans will be painted with…wait…no. That’s not going to happen this time around, and we’re not back in The Originals Season 1.
Let’s start over.
Klaus Mikaelson has been freed on The Originals Season 4 Episode 2, “No Quarter,” and he’s going home to his daughter, with his family by his side. Now that sounds better to me.
Children change things. It’s a fact of life, a tale as old as time, that will be setting them all up for a different kind of journey, one of changing the narrative and building a life grounded in love and hope.
For five years Klaus Mikaelson knew this and it frightened him. Children are the ultimate responsibility that you can’t flake out on or set off to the side for later. They’re a part of you and depend on you to learn how navigate this life.
Klaus could’ve escaped from Marcel before. He’s stubborn like that and we’ve got plenty of evidence of Klaus doing the unthinkable. But the fear that he wasn’t strong enough or good enough for his daughter, chained him down more than the physical ones Marcel shackled him with.
If not for his subconscious, he wouldn’t have had the strength to take a chance and try for her, his daughter, Hope.

As much as I miss Camille, I love the fact that The Originals chose her to be the manifestation of his subconscious. He thought the world of her and she saw a light in him. Who better to keep him sane for five years and help him confront the fears he’s so adamant that he can’t conquer?
Deep down he knows he can do better for his family, future, and his daughter. But he’s afraid to own up to it and accept that he’s something more than a monster. So until that moment comes, until he can accept that there’s good in his heart, the person who saw that light inside of him, will guide him.
Klaus Mikaelson has changed from the hybrid we were introduced to on The Vampire Diaries. “No Quarter” proves that this isn’t a phase or a passing fancy. This is the evolution of his character born out of pain, love, and survival.
And just as Klaus has gone through an evolution, each and every single member of this family has gone through one as well. Here’s hoping that we get to see more of Hayley’s five year journey and what plagued the other Mikaelson’s minds as they lay there waiting for her to revive them.
They’re no longer the vampires, witches, or hybrids from before.

Now onto the captor, the friend, and the son of Klaus Mikaelson.
Marcel lets the Mikaelsons go for two reasons. One, he has the power. He’s stronger, faster, and his bite will be the end of them. He’s sure in his capability of taking them down if need be.
And two, he still loves them all deep, deep down inside.
He’s not ready to accept/face the fact that he still thinks of them as family. That’s why he’s so angry with the Mikaelson’s even after so much time has passed. Family hurt him and that’s the worst kind of pain there is because it lingers even when they’re not there.
A part of himself hates the fact that they still have a place in his hybrid heart, but it’s true. No matter how much the Mikaelsons have hurt him and his own, no matter how many times others reassure him he’s not a Mikaelson, they’re still his family. And one day he’ll forgive them.
Pain lingers over time. It also heals. You can count on that.
Additional Thoughts:
- Now we know what happened to Danny Mahealani on Teen Wolf! After getting sick and tired of werewolves in Beacon Hills, he graduated early, and decided to head down to New Orleans for a new life. Unbeknownst to him, trouble lurks in New Orleans. And the guys he’s dating? Well he’s traded one supernatural creature for another equally as handsome one.
- Do not mix business with pleasure Marcel Gerard! Your slicked back hair companion is trouble! I thought she was reminiscent of a certain blonde in season 3 only to realize she’s the same woman! A dye job is not going to make anyone, but Marcel, forget that her loyalty is and will forever be to herself. Or the highest bidder of course.
- Freya is angry. It’s in the line of her body and the way she holds herself. She’s going to pop soon, reasons for this anger spilling out like confetti. When she does, it’ll certainly be because someone threatened the most precious thing to her, her family.
