Jane The Virgin Review: Chapter Fifty-Eight (Season 3 Episode 14)
It’s safe to say that things are looking up!
We’re back with an all-new episode of Jane The Virgin after a three-week hiatus.
I wasn’t too keen Jane the Virgin Season 3 Episode 13, the episode before the break. I was left rather dissatisfied, and with the whole three-year time jump in general for that matter.
However, Jane The Virgin, Season 3 Episode 14, “Chapter Fifty-Eight,” proves that it’s getting better as we get to see Jane heal.
The episode centers more around Jane’s evaluation of herself as a mother to Mateo, which brings a sudden misunderstanding fight between Jane and Petra. With Mateo being cute as ever, he tells Jane that he wants her to be around more at his school, to be more involved in his classroom just like how Petra is with her daughters.

This triggers Jane’s thought process of how she thinks Mateo must be feeling about her as a mother.
Jane’s constant worry and insecurities on how to be the perfect mother to Mateo is understandable, yes, but it also shows how much she really wants to become better even though she seems to be perfectly fine.
This is what I wanted to see more of in this three-year time jump — more of Jane’s growth, her challenges, her struggles, and everything that centers around her being an exceptional woman.
“Chapter Fifty-Eight” is an important episode for Jane’s arc regarding the aftermath of Michael’s death.
As she speaks with Mateo’s aide alongside Rafael, Rafael points out to her–in such a proud moment–that this is the first time she was able to speak about Michael without crying.
This is a step forward in Jane’s character. It really is.
This is what I wanted to see happen for her. Although we didn’t get to see her grieving process, this step in stone moment for her shows how she had been hurting, so in a way, we are able to see another side of Jane’s healing.
In addition to when she last spoke about her novel and teared up while talking about Michael, that is.
Petra and Jane’s dispute about fighting over who should be room mom is one of the many funny parts of this episode. The political commentary is hilarious. Who doesn’t love a good comical debate-like showdown?
There are some alternative facts thrown around; I see you, Jane The Virgin writers.
This whole argument mainly centers around Petra and Jane’s insecurities of their parenting styles, but little do they know they both envied each other.
I’m really enjoying the development of Jane and Petra’s love-hate friendship this season.
It doesn’t feel mean, crude or vengeful like how it used to before. This time around, they are there for each other in a way where sometimes fights like these show you how much they actually appreciate each other, but they pride themselves in actually speaking up about it.

But there is a plot twist on that room mom debacle — Rafael ends up being the room mom!
I keep saying this over and over again, but this new look for Rafael is absolutely beautiful on him.
He. Looks. So. Good.
Zen Rafael is the best Rafael, and I refuse to hear otherwise. Justin Baldoni, you are one handsome fella.
While Jane struggles with feeling like a hot mess of a mother, Xiomara struggles with her complicated feelings for Bruce.
Uh-oh. We’re back to square one. Not again, not this time.
Just when you thought this new engagement would open up a new door for Xiomara’s arc with Bruce, after she practices her testimony with Bruce and Rogelio for court, Xiomara makes it known that she still has feelings for Rogelio in a not-so-subtle way.
I thought we were over this love triangle stuff by now?
If the writers end up having these two get together, then please, KEEP them together for good this time. Aye Yai Yai!
Other lingering thoughts:
- Rafael and Petra hooked up! This is not a drill! WHAAAT.
- Alba was too adorable in this episode! The way that she wanted Jorge to notice her was cute to watch. Who says you can’t work up a sexy dress and killer make-up at an older age?
- “Are you ready to make everyone fall in love with me?” Awkward timing, Rogelio!
- Mateo chopped up a good junk of Jane’s hair and as she was advised to ignore Mateo’s actions by his aide, I definitely wouldn’t have been that calm. In fact, I’d cry. Hard.
