Grey’s Anatomy Review: Till I Hear it From You (Season 13 Episode 17)

Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

Communication, and what happens when there is a lack of it, is the major theme on Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 17, “‘Till I Hear it From You.”

And as an audience member, that lack of communication is just incredibly frustrating.

Maggie’s treatment of her mother is unbearable, and it’s even worse knowing the reason her mother is actually in the hospital in the first place. Her problem with her mom’s supposed breast implants runs deeper than plastic surgery, but it doesn’t make the things she says any less horrible.

Thankfully, Jackson steps in and says he can’t do the surgery unless Diane tells Maggie what’s really going on.

Jackson has been in an impossible situation with this from the start, and he handles it the only way he knows how. Of course, Maggie is upset with him, but she can’t fault him for keeping this from her either. It was never his place.

For Owen and Amelia, communication is a continued issue. Amelia is dealing with an unthinkable trauma, and maybe she does need some space, but it’s time for her to sit down with her husband and talk. Really talk.

I hate that Owen can’t seem to ever have happiness. I was so sure he would have that with Amelia, but instead, it’s almost a repeat of his relationship with Cristina.

Amelia brings her up in the midst of a yelling match, too, which — while I’m glad that happens because it’s a reminder of her character — is completely uncalled for.

I mean, seriously.

I was always excited about the possibility of these two getting together because I felt they shared a similar understanding of the world. I thought they would be this perfect match for reasons just like this. Of everyone in her world, Owen is the best suited to support her.

I’ve said it before, several times I think, but it also feels increasingly necessary to see Amelia’s backstory. I was watching Private Practice when she lost control and when her fiancée died. And I was watching it when she gave birth to her baby.

But for those who didn’t watch, I imagine it would be harder to sympathize with her character. In fact, even as someone who did watch, those flashbacks would certainly make all of this more powerful to me.

On a lighter note, Meredith and Riggs DO talk, and it seems they might just manage to go on a date soon. Meredith’s hesitation makes sense, and she puts in Riggs to give her a reason to want to be with him.

I’m hopeful they’ll pursue a relationship, not only because I think Riggs could be good for Meredith at this point in her life, but also because Grey’s Anatomy needs some romance, some laughter, and some lighter storylines overall.

I’d have happily watched a longer conversation between Alex and Meredith about not being picky when it comes to good sex, or even Richard and Arizona hashing things out. What I can’t handle much more of is all the fighting and the negativity.

Grey’s Anatomy is a show that, in the past, has been able to balance intense drama with fun. What we’re getting lately is something else entirely, and it’s exhausting.

Other Thoughts:

  • This episode also gives us another tragic story. It’s awful seeing Dr. Clatch walk out of that hospital alone.
  • Richard and Arizona’s friendship continues to be one of my favorite things.
  • Now that Alex is back at the hospital, can we see him doing more work there, please?
  • Really, Andrew? Now is the time to confess those feelings?
