Grey’s Anatomy Review: Civil War (Season 13 Episode 15)

Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m exhausted.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 15, “Civil War,” continues the hospital drama, and I just don’t know if I care anymore.

The start of it was interesting, and it was nice to focus on the hospital itself for a while, but now it feels like it’s gone on long enough. It’s time to see some sort of resolution.

I’m especially bothered by the way it’s causing problems between Jackson and April, who both deserve more happiness than this. April’s ambition could prove to be a good thing, but for the moment, even their bickering feels like the same thing we’ve seen before.

I would like to see April in a position of authority, but I don’t want her to take Meredith’s place either.

Actually, I’d like to see Meredith doing more as Chief of General surgery in the first place. It’s still Meredith’s story I care the most about it, and watching her work is something we don’t seem to get enough of.

Something else it’s time to see resolved? Owen and Amelia.

Amelia finally returns to the hospital thanks to some begging on Maggie’s part, and while she’s there, she winds up working a case with Owen when her intention was to avoid him altogether.

Of course Amelia is going to have a hard time discussing having children with Owen, but all Owen wants is to be there for her. There’s a disconnect too, since you really only know Amelia’s story if you watched Private Practice.

It seems there would be a way to include flashbacks to bring that back a bit, because it’s powerful, and it’s an important part of her character we haven’t been able to see in the same amount of depth on Grey’s Anatomy.

I appreciate Alex’s take on Meredith and Nathan, and it’s one reason I adore their friendship.

Alex: If you’re into the guy, why don’t you just be with him?
Meredith: Because I don’t want to be with him.
Alex: Come on. Because of Maggie? She’ll get over it.
Meredith: No, I don’t want to be with him.
Alex: Okay. You do though.

Alex knows Meredith probably better than anyone else at this point, and his reasoning is so simple and straightforward. Besides, Riggs could be good for Meredith at this stage in her life, and after everything she’s gone through.

My heart is broken for Richard. It’s bad enough that he feels alienated from his wife and has been pushed out of his job, but to see Arizona with Eliza — ugh, it’s a kick in the gut.

I wish Arizona had just told him about her relationship with Eliza from the start rather than trying to hide it from him and everyone else.

Other Thoughts:

  • I couldn’t help but take Nathan’s side when it came to the baby, especially when they actually found a heart. Alex seems too harsh.
  • Ben has been a joy to watch through all of this. Everyone else could learn from his attitude.
  • Richard’s request for better beds in on-call rooms is probably a good idea, right? They should really make that happen.
