Jane The Virgin Review: Chapter Fifty-Six (Season 3 Episode 12)
Jane is still grieving Michael, and that’s okay.
Jane The Virgin Season 3 Episode 12, “Chapter Fifty-Six”, allows Jane to still grieve the loss of Michael when her panic attacks start to come back. She quits her job without thinking twice, as it adds on to more of her distress.
This time-jump is going to take a bit to get used to for me.
I’m here for Jane’s personal growth, but I would love to have seen it blossom over the course of several episodes, and not have it jump to the present just like that.
The episode starts off one month after Michael’s death as we see Jane in therapy.
I’m glad we get to see this part of her grieving process. What worried me was that we wouldn’t be able to see Jane cope with her grief, but seeing that she went to therapy for it was a good thing.

In the present three-year jump, we see that Jane’s panic attacks have come back, due to the sight of Dennis at The Marbella. He was Michael’s friend and colleague that we all pretty much forgot about. He is there to investigate the murder of Scott.
When we go back to the flashbacks we learn that Dennis was there for Jane to be that someone to lean on for support following Michael’s funeral. He helps her go through his things, but she finds him going through Michael’s things checking to see if he was ever involved with Sin Rostro.
Bad move, Dennis.
In the present, Jane slapping Dennis not one, but two times is highly un-Jane-like. Heck, it had me scared.
I am glad to see that they are able to hash things out later on in the boxing ring, where Dennis is honest about why he did what he did before. He wanted to clear Michael’s name.
Okay, you’re forgiven now, Dennis.
For a second there, I started to wonder if there was more that happened between them, but just thinking that had me wanting to slap myself. Jane would never do that – what was I thinking?!
I need to remind myself that the present episode is a three-year time jump, and not where it left off from Season 3 Episode 10.
Jane is different and so is everyone else.

Speaking of everyone else, Zen Rafael is my favorite Rafael. I love this new side of him that’s brought out in this time jump. I guess prison really changed him.
People need to stop hating on that scruff though – he pulls it off very well.
However, Zen Rafael might have something to do with Scott’s death, or so it seems. I really hope it isn’t true. Maybe it’s some type of red-herring or something.
You would have thought that, by now, all of these sudden deaths and murders at The Marbella would be done with. I guess even now it still continues to haunt them.
The scene between Petra and Rogelio is comical, and the highlight of this episode. We never had these two share a scene together before, did we? I would definitely like to see more of it.
Petra not understanding Rogelio with his accent, and Rogelio not understanding hers is way too funny to watch.
Rogelio and Xo’s tension on this episode of Jane The Virgin is weird, and Rogelio’s behavior has been disappointing with this whole Darci-Xo-Rogelio drama. It’s probably my least favorite part of this time-jump.
Stray Thoughts:
- Mateo is a hilarious kid, and his scene with Rogelio is comical. That kid is too cute.
- I finally remember Zen Rafael’s girlfriend’s name. Her name is Abby, and she is as zen as he is.
- I’m kind of digging Petra and Chuck together.
