Grey’s Anatomy Review: None of Your Business (Season 13 Episode 12)
It’s just as I suspected, and we can all breathe a sigh of relief now. Sort of.
On Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 12, “None of Your Business,” Alex’s fate is officially revealed. He’s not going to prison, despite the fact that so many of his loved ones think he’s already there.
Andrew beat him to the punch, and essentially dropped the charges. (Not technically, because they weren’t his charges to drop, but he made clear he’d ruin the case if it went forward.)

GIACOMO GIANNIOTTI
Alex tries to find out why Andrew would do this, but Andrew has no interest in talking to him.
This entire storyline has been an exercise is deciding how to feel about these two characters. Alex was always the one in the wrong here, but Andrew was somehow the bad guy. Meanwhile, we root for Alex despite the fact that he beat a guy nearly to death.
It isn’t that simple, though. Alex finally apologizes to Andrew, and that’s when he goes off. He says he understood all along why Alex wailed on him — what it was Alex thought he saw. If only Alex had apologizes sooner, it might have changed everything.
It’s hard not to take Andrew’s side on that, because he makes a good point. It also feels a bit cheap though. He really put Alex through nearly going to trial when a proper apology would have been enough?
Of course, the reason Andrew really dropped the charges is because of Jo. He clearly cares for her (which is obvious in the very least to Ben, who tells Bailey she must be blind) and he doesn’t want her to have to be afraid.
Bailey’s one saving grace in this episode is giving Alex his job back. But Alex is returning to a hospital that is currently in turmoil.
Here’s the thing. I’ve been angry with Bailey, and it truly does feel like she’s taking all of this too far. Suspending Meredith (and replacing her with Kepner!) is unnecessarily harsh. After all, everyone is taking a stand for Richard, who was their mentor and who built this program.
What’s really happening, though, is that Bailey is shouldering the burden. She’s allowing herself to take the hit so that Richard doesn’t have to find out it’s his own wife who is calling his methods into question and taking his position away from him.
Bailey is the face of it, but remember, this isn’t coming from her. I think she’s willing to be the bad guy if it means sheltering Richard from the truth.
As is typical, the patient of the week serves as a sort of metaphor with what’s happening with the doctors.

MARTIN HENDERSON, KEVIN MCKIDD
Alex has avoided prison but has been hiding out at the houses. Amelia has continued to stay holed up in Stephanie’s apartment. Even Bailey is dealing with boundaries.
The patient is a woman who is wrapped in barbed wire — a private woman who built a wall around her house with her husband.
It was after her husband’s death that she began to feel like a prisoner in her own home, but she couldn’t convince herself to leave. In her near death experience of falling into the barbed wire while trying to take it down, she was essentially rescued from that prison.
It’s a hard case to watch, that’s for sure. I was even convinced Owen was going to end up more injured than he did when he reached in to hold the woman still.
Thank goodness, this story has a happy ending.
Maggie’s mother, on the other hand…
I should have known from the moment she arrived at the hospital that something was wrong. Maggie’s mother didn’t come to town for plastic surgery and a visit with her daughter — she’s there because she’s worried about a spot on her chest.

LATANYA RICHARDSON JACKSON, KELLY MCCREARY
The look on Jackson’s face when he sees it speaks volumes, and after some tests, he has to give her the bad news.
Jesse Williams is always so good at showing those kinds of emotions — compassion and strength, hope and sadness, all at once. It’s things like this that allow his character to shine.
Jackson is, of course, willing to go the extra mile and help answer questions when it’s time to tell Maggie the news, but Maggie’s anger at her mother gets in the way.
I just hope she gets the news before it’s too late.
Other Thoughts:
- I love that Meredith just flat-out tells Minnick “no” rather than trying to give her an excuse.
- I realize we aren’t seeing much of Amelia because of Caterina Scorsone’s pregnancy, but I’m already exhausted by her leaving Owen. I wanted these two to have a for more minutes of happiness before the relationship troubles settled in.
- Does anyone else want to know what Meredith binge-watches on TV? I do.
- Congratulations to Grey’s Anatomy for being renewed for Season 14! I’m convinced this show will go on forever.
