Bates Motel: 5 Shocking Moments from “Dark Paradise” (Season 5 Episode 1)
Whoa, amirite?
Bates Motel has finally returned for its fifth and final season, and “Dark Paradise” sure comes out with a bang!
Following the tragic event of last season, viewers were left with so much curiosity of what’s to come for the fifth season. The angst was definitely real and now that the show is back, it continues to make us go crazy!

Bates Motel Season 5 Episode 1, “Dark Paradise” picks up after a two-year time jump following Norma’s heartbreaking demise and everything has changed. Well, some of it at least.
Here are the five most shocking moments from the Bates Motel Season 5 Premiere:
5. Emma and Dylan are married, and they have a baby!

My shipper heart is feeling all kinds of feels! Emma and Dylan were the highlight of Season 4. Their friendship blossomed into a loving, cute, and healthy relationship last season. Dylan decided to move to Seattle with Emma, and that’s where it left off.
In the premiere, they are not only married but they have a beautiful baby girl together. Ah! I’m so happy for them. They both have been through so much over the course of the seasons.
With Emma’s illness deteriorating to finally getting better, and from Dylan never feeling like he belonged in Norma’s family and connecting with Emma, they grew very close.
But, sigh, they have no idea that Norma is dead. Their great bubble of happiness is about to burst once they do.
4. Sheriff Romero is in prison!
Poor Romero. He lost the love of his life, Norma and was absolutely broken.
Now, in the premiere, he is not only mourning her death, but he is also in prison. Remember when he killed that drug dealer last season in order to protect Norma and Norman? I guess his bad deed was exposed soon after and now as he is deemed to be that “dirty cop.”
He would do anything to protect her, even if it meant killing a very bad person. But his secret caught up to him and now he’s in prison, with a new haircut and a denied parole. Ouch. I think he is way past his breaking point now!
3. Norman is as dangerous as he was last season.

Norman’s mental state is getting worse, much worse than before. His mother is still “with” him as he continues to talk, fight and bicker with Norma like they always did. His blackouts are increasing. How come no one else knows about her death except for Romero?!
She’s a literal ghost, still in his conscience and who knows what Norman will do next. I’m nervous!
2. We’ve got someone new checked-in, and he’s already acting mysterious.
As he calls himself ‘David Davidson,’ played by Austin Nichols, this new guy in town already has me suspicious.
He has a mysterious woman inside and he has Norman wary of his actions. But then again, Norman is always wary of everyone that wants to check-in into the motel.
I am wondering what is in store for his story-line, though.
1. Romero sends a hitman to murder Norman, but Norman kills him instead.
OK, this part is the most shocking part of the premiere. I knew Romero was out for vengeance against Norman for causing Norma’s death but my, oh my, I didn’t think he would actually have someone kill him! Before the hitman could take a shot at Norman, he kills him instead.
But it looks like he believes Norma killed him to protect him. ANOTHER BLACKOUT!
Norman knows that it was Romero that sent him, and something tells me it’s about to be a dangerous game where two can play the game. Romero has always felt uneasy about Norman, no matter how hard he tried to accept him for Norma’s sake.
But now, he is out for blood. Literally.
Season 5 is about to be one wild, final ride, that’s for sure.

I’m a huge fan of this show. Vera Farmiga is brilliant as Norman’s wacko mother and overall it’s been a great prequel to the film. However, I was happy with last season’s ending as it wrapped the show up nicely. Having seen this season’s premiere episode my opinion hasn’t changed. I really don’t know if I want to sit through an entire season of Norman getting worse. The show feels like it’s lost it’s appeal and is dragging on now. Anyway, I’ll give it the 4 episode test and see how it develops.
