The Mick Review: Pilot (Season 1 Episode 1)

Reviews, The Mick

Isn’t it exciting when a comedy pilot has funny moments that weren’t in the trailer?

The Mick, “Pilot,” is full of promise for a hilarious first season. The show stars Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia), as a rough-around-the-edges aunt who gets stuck looking after her snobby niece and nephews after their rich parents are charged with fraud.

In the first episode, we get to see Olson’s Mickey go up against her niece Sabrina (Sofia Black-D’Elia) and neighbor Kim (Susan Park).

Whether she’s drugging her niece to keep her from going out or “accidentally” dropping Kim’s casserole, it’s clear that watching this low-class wreck out-wit and out-bitch these upper-class snobs is going to be a highlight of this show.

It is also worth noting that the casting in this show is fantastic. Olson is brilliant at playing a degenerate as we’ve seen in Always Sunny, but it’s great to see her being a lovable degenerate here in The Mick.

The kids are also spot-on.

Black-D’Elia is perfect at playing the entitled teenage foil – as if viewers could expect anything less from a Gossip Girl alum.

And Thomas Barbusca (Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp), who plays nephew Chip, is always a scene-stealer, so it’s great to see him freak out about being bullied by the kid with the “raddest freaking dong in school.”

At the close of the episode, Mickey finds out that her sister and brother-in-law have fled the country, leaving her with the kids for longer than expected – giving her ample time to try out her questionable methods and terrible advice on her niece and nephews while enjoying access to their high-class lifestyle.

Stray Observations

  • The fact that the Planned Parenthood joke calls out that the organization does more than just abortions (Mickey just has some bacterial infections, okay?) was enough to make me keep watching.
  • Alba is clearly the greatest maid on earth, and Carla Jiminez is a treasure: “I do not like these people. But I like you.” Cheers!
  • Is there anything more satisfying than hearing Mickey say, “Oh, sweetheart. That’s not chicken”?

What did you think of the series premiere of The Mick? Would you want to party with a woman who has a high tolerance for ‘quil and tasers? How long do you think it’ll be before a woman who “cannot count the number of times I’ve been ripped off a bar stool and thrown in a cage” will end up with her own legal troubles?

And why do you think Carla looked surprised that they weren’t eating chicken in that final dinner scene?  We know Mickey didn’t cook it.  Let us know what you think in the comments below!
