Supergirl Review: We Can Be Heroes (Season 2 Episode 10)

Reviews, Supergirl

Apparently, the episode title for Supergirl Season 2 Episode 10 applies to just about anyone.

Kara is still the hero of her own show right? She may be the title character, but on “We Can Be Heroes,” Supergirl is anything but front and center.

On this episode we’ve officially reached the point where Mon El has become useless and excessive to the story. He was clearly brought on to be a love interest for Kara, but the thing is he’s more trouble than he’s worth, and all his plot points could’ve been executed as good or better in the hands of James and/or Winn.

With James’ story as the Guardian running alongside Mon El’s attempt to become a superhero it deflates all of the impact from either character’s actions.

It’s as if Mon El was brought on specifically to replace James, except James is still here and the back and forth romance is infinitely more juvenille. Kara continually asking Mon El if he likes her and him continually dodging the question harkens back to middle school in the most cringeworthy way.

Both Mon El and James cause Kara more trouble than they’re worth this week. While it would be great for Kara not to always have to carry the hero burden alone, this is not the way to cut any slack.

LiveWire: You know what I love? Little boys who think they can do a better job than the woman who’s an actual superhero. It’s pathetic.

LiveWire’s line makes me think that again, this plot could have been well done, had it been just between Kara, James, and Winn. But presently these three interwoven hero plots have gotten out of control in a way that just doesn’t work. Reign in your boys Supergirl.

LiveWire is one of the best villians on the show. Her sass, her willingness to listen to Kara, and her open love for power make her interesting and exciting and a great foil for Kara to play off of every now and then. I’m excited for the possibility of her returning in the future. And I wouldn’t be upset if she brought Cat Grant back with her either.

Aside from LiveWire “We Can Be Heroes” only other real highlight is the story between J’onn and M’Gann. These two have had a rocky relationship since M’Gann revealed that she’s a white martian, and thereby part of the race that wiped out all of J’onn’s people.

When something starts draining the life from her J’onn is forced to make a decision: let her die or share the mind meld with her, thereby giving her access to all his thoughts and memories. It’s difficult for him at first, but when push comes to shove, J’onn is able to set aside his hatred for white martians so save M’Gann as had done for him.

He finally understands that she isn’t like the rest of her people at all. She tried to save as many of his people as she could, even though it put her own life at great risk. M’Gann only ever lied to him because she wanted to be his friend.

Theirs is a beautiful story of forgiveness and not judging others by the actions of a group they had no say in being a part of, such as race or nationality. M’Gann’s story is especially poignant today and I hope her story continues this way.

J’onn: It’s time to come home.

Supergirl Review: We Can Be Heroes (Season 2 Episode 10)

There is one way that Supergirl could save the mess it’s made of Kara’s love life this season: make Kara Danvers asexual. Kara has turned down sexual/romantic advances from Winn, James, and now Mon El. Even her brief romance with Cat’s eldest son only lasted for a single episode.

If the reason that Kara keeps feeling uncomfortable in these relationships is working towards something instead of just bad writing, the stories actually work.

Asexual Kara can absolutely still have a relationship, but perhaps the reason she hasn’t felt comfortably in one yet, is that she isn’t sure where she falls on the spectrum.

The asexual community has virtually no representation on television. Supergirl could continue to make important strides in providing representation to vastly underrepresented groups by revealing their hero as asexual.

Other thoughts:

  • Maggie and Alex betting on what Kara does is 100% adorable, more of this please.
  • I miss the superfriends and I think Kara’s being a bit hypocritical of James and Winn. If they’re going to do it either way, wouldn’t she rather protect them and have them with her rather than leaving them hanging in the wind?
  • What are your thoughts on the James/Kara/Mon El story? Are we beyond love triangles or are we circling back to redundancy?
