Shadowhunters Review: Dust and Shadows (Season 2 Episode 5)
The death of Jocelyn is affecting everybody on Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 5, “Dust and Shadows,” but Clary, Alec, and Luke take it the hardest.
Personally, I’ve never had a parent die or be killed, but I’m pretty positive I wouldn’t want to bring them back from the dead. I get it; Clary is supposed to be in mourning. She can’t live without her mother, so she wants to bring her back.
The only thing this episode did was make Clary look and sound even more annoying than she already does.
Clary has been a shadowhunter for all of five minutes, but for some reason, she thinks she knows it all and knows what’s best. Common sense would be to listen to someone, like Magnus, and not even attempt the resurrection but with Clary that will never happen because she just can’t listen to anyone.
Honestly, mostly everyone in this episode annoyed me — Clary, Aldertree, and Simon.
Aldertree is upset that Jace saved his life and let the sword go, I mean come on. How does Jace, the man you accused of being on Valentine’s side, fighting Valentine in front of you and risking his life to save you not prove that he’s on your side?
Yeah, he let the sword go, but in return, he saved your life so you can continue to cause problems at the Institute. Jace is not a traitor.
Also, I hope I’m not the only one who feels like he’s coming onto Izzy as he gives her the medicine to heal the venom infection. The way he acts around her makes me incredibly uncomfortable.
Let’s not forget that the medicine Aldertree gives Izzy is very addictive, which means we’re going to have to watch Izzy deal with addiction in future episodes. Izzy just wants to see the Iron Sisters in her lifetime, but she shouldn’t have to get through this to do it.

Meanwhile, Simon is out doing is his own foolish thing by moving back in with his mother. Look, Simon has been the best thing about this season, for me, so far. But, this stunt does not help him out.
I would love to be inside of Simon’s head when he begins to think that moving back in with his mother is a good thing. How telling her that he is a vampire is a good thing. That thought process intrigues me.
I also don’t understand why he would leave a bottle of blood just sitting in plain sight. Simon is going through a rough patch in his life and needs someone to help guide him. The first step for Simon would be to get his own place or to make amends with Rafael and move back into the den.
Overall, this episode laid tracks for multiple storylines, but it isn’t one of my favorites. My absolute favorite parts are the funeral scene and Jace and Izzy’s training scene. The episode may not be the best, but we are constantly blessed with the digital effects upgrade that season 2 got.
Other Thoughts:
- Alec does not have to try and help Clary during this difficult time. He is there for her because he wants to be. Yeah, he killed her mother, but it wasn’t actually him and shouldn’t be held responsible.
- I really thought that the demon in the preview for the episode was going to end up being Jocelyn after coming back to life. I was a little disappointed.
- Simon’s sister is a real piece of work.
- I can’t wait to see where Luke ran off to in next week’s episode.
