Emerald City Review: Everybody Lies (Season 1 Episode 5)

Emerald City, Reviews

Emerald City Season 1 Episode 5, “Everybody Lies,” takes some really interesting steps forward.

Even Lucas/Roan and Dorothy’s plots become more intriguing, which has, thus far, been a weak point in the series.

But, even if that weren’t the case, Jack and Princess Langwidere’s story is worth enduring the slower, main plots for. If you’re watching this episode and are not at least the tiniest bit enamored with Jack and the Lady Ev’s little twisted romance, then I don’t know what to say to you.

That’s not to say we necessarily ship them, but there’s no denying that they are incredibly fascinating.

Although she was set up to be cruel and twisted, it seems as though the Princess is also lonely and incredibly confused — not too mention majorly emotionally scarred and severely inexperienced with how the real world works.

That, of course, doesn’t justify purchasing a man to be her friend, but…

You win some, you lose some.

At least now we have some understanding of why she is the way she is, even if we have yet to see what, exactly, she is hiding under that mask. My best guess is that she was horribly disfigured in some way when her city was destroyed.

It’s only a matter of time before we’ll know for sure.

While Dorothy is still quite bland to watch, at least her story is coming together to create something just interesting enough to keep us watching — which is important, considering how much screen time is dedicated to her and her journey.

We successfully progress her story forward this week by finally having Dorothy and the Wizard meet face to face. Up until this point, it has seemed like the show was stalling to draw out the time leading up to this moment, but simply failed to keep Dorothy’s journey interesting enough to justify the wait.

Now, however, we have a very interesting and, perhaps for the first time since we met the Wizard, genuine reunion between the two, which, naturally, makes us wonder how he knows her so well.

Here’s the theory:

Dorothy’s mother was one of West’s concubines. The Wizard slept with (possibly raped?) her, and Dorothy was born, hence why her Mother abandoned her. Maybe Dorothy served as a memory of something horrible that she endured and it was too painful to see her every day.

And maybe, just maybe, the Wizard actually cared about her, and cared about Dorothy, and he found a way to send them home to safety when the Beast Forever turned up.

Or maybe I’m giving the Wizard far too much credit.

The biggest complaint for this episode is that we did not get to see nearly enough of Tip’s story. Tip and Jack, thus far, are carrying this show — we need to see so much more of them!
