Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Review: Is Josh Free in Two Weeks? (Season 2 Episode 12)

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Review: Is Josh Free in Two Weeks? (Season 2 Episode 12)

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Reviews

Weddings are a season finale must, and if anyone can respect a decent television trope, it’s Rebecca.

Rebecca tries to plan the her (irrationally elaborate) dream wedding with a deadline of less than two weeks on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 12 “Is Josh Free in Two Weeks?” She refuses to ask anyone for help.

Sounds like the work of a master self-saboteur who never thinks things through, doesn’t it?

Surprisingly enough, thanks to a last minute save from an irrationally rational Valencia, everything goes smoothly. Rebecca has all of her dreams come true, including a fantastic dress and a visit from her long-absent father.

It’s all going to be okay!

If you believed that, you’re probably a first time viewer.

Near the end of the episode, I even found myself saying aloud, “something’s about to go wrong. It has to.” I had no idea what that might be, but Rebecca’s happiness is as elusive as a forest green tuxedo.

Trent’s appearance makes me laugh so hard – I had to rewind just to hear what he actually said.

Of course. OF COURSE! I knew it! Boy, I forgot about him.

Between the charismatic Nathaniel and Josh’s relentless fashion mistakes, how was I supposed to remember that Trent was out there walking around with his weird chin and oddly chiseled body?

This would be vaguely interesting if it were the only real monkey wrench to the wedding, however, the fact that Rebecca is getting married for the sake of getting married (because she believes it’s what she wants,) this wedding is doomed from the start.

Rebecca’s self-pressure to see this wedding turn out perfectly is the antithesis of what should go into wedding planning, yet it’s how she perceives “normal” weddings.

Her tiny breakdown as she asks Patrick the delivery guy to tell her that she’s normal displays a perfect example of the kind of pressure that led her to move to West Covina to begin with.

Rebecca longs for normal, not knowing that normal is actually easy.

Normal is the path of least resistance. A normal relationship doesn’t need you to suddenly quit your job and move across the country. A normal wedding doesn’t sap your energy and make you question your self-worth.

Instead, because Rebecca is an off-her-rocker overachiever, we get an impromptu DUI DIY wedding with at least twenty pages of planning that is, at my best guess, hovering around $10,000.

Like normal people do.

“Be careful what you wish for” has always been an underlying theme for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and it’s about to come to a head in next week’s season finale. Rebecca’s wanted so desperately to end up in a love triangle and little does she know that she’s about to find herself in a dodecahedron.

So fasten your seatbelts and tighten your cummerbunds, because this wedding is going to be… well, I don’t know.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend lives for the most cringeworthy twists. Who knows? They may end up married after all.

Meanwhile, we have Nathaniel who is so desperate for his father’s approval that he… forgets to wash kale?

Honestly, I’m uncertain what the point of this particular storyline is outside of the laugh factor (Maya taking the blame for farting is a hoot), to introduce the concept of naps for men, and to give Rachel Bloom time to change costumes.

We do get to see Darryl step up once more as a father, while we also watch Paula do all the heavy-lifting that moms should do, and that’s a beautiful sight in and of itself.

Not everything’s perfect, but with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, not everything has to be. We have Seth Green for that.

Sh*t Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Characters Say

  • Rebecca: “If it isn’t the plotting understudy waiting in the wings with a bag of marbles.” (The imagery. So specific!)
  • Patrick: “I would, but I’m the delivery guy, so…”
  • The Sugar Ray cover band, Splenda Ray.
  • Rebecca: “And so I already went on Craigslist today and posted an ad for a hummer and I got… a lot of responses.”
  • Paula: “Everybody loves a Costco sheet cake.” (Preach!)
  • Seth Green’s face as he suddenly finds himself in a musical number.
  • The package playing while Rebecca and Patrick sit on top of the piano killed me.
  • Mr. Plimpton: “You look like an unsuccessful oil tycoon.”
  • Valencia: “You look like the guest of honor at a park ranger gala.”
