Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Review: Josh is the Man of My Dreams, Right? (Season 2 Episode 11)
The Santa Ana Winds are sweeping through town and making things weeeeeeeiiiirrrdd.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 11, “Josh is the Man of My Dreams, Right?” focuses on Rebecca’s trepidation surrounding the huge decision of marrying Josh.
After listening an offhand comment about how the love of your life should give you goosebumps #allthetimeforeverintoeternity, Rebecca seeks to find the spark she lost in her two-month-old relationship (maybe, we’re never really given a sense of time; Rebecca does everything quickly).
Unfortunately, she finds that spark behind the eyes of another man.
Aside from that being a tall order for any relationship, poor Josh has to meet Rebecca’s other standards of romantic comedy perfection. He falls short just by being his simple self and he has no idea.
So Rebecca falling into the lips of another man was only a matter of when, not if.
I’ve mentioned before that Rebecca isn’t suited for monogamy, at least not with Josh. That it only takes Paula’s wispy goosebumps comment and a weird sex dream to threaten her “ideal” relationship proves that she’s definitely not ready to commit herself to one person for a week, let alone for the rest of her life.
The concept of a One True Love, however, is one she is not going to divest herself from very easily.
Enter Slytherin Nathaniel to calmly and rationally suggest they have intercourse to drive the building lust out of both their systems, sending Rebecca into a moral tizzy.
Josh IS her perfect man, right? Right…?
We knew from the moment Nathaniel appeared on the show that his smarmy, handsome lawyer demeanor was meant to simultaneously interrupt Rebecca’s “happiness” while still adhering to her love of the dramatic rom-com formula, i.e. the coworker whom you hate yet with whom you have undeniable chemistry. A tale as old as time.
The fact that his request comes so quickly and directly actually matches Rebecca’s own flair for instant gratification; Masking it behind a nonchalant, collected air makes him seem like the perfect yang to Rebecca’s yin.
I’m not buying that for a moment.
While their outward styles and inner thoughts complement each other, the only perfect relationship for Rebecca involves her letting go of all those notions of love once and for all, a dream we know won’t be coming true for quite some time.
Plus, if life were as simple as “let’s have sex to get it over with, then no more,” the world would be a utopia by now.
On the other side of the office are Paula, struggling with forgiving Scott, and Darryl who so desperately wants Paula to see him as a best friend that he’s willing to meddle and overstep just to see her happy.
It’s sort of the opposite of what Rebecca does.
Rebecca oversteps to see her own wacky plans bear fruit. Here, Darryl does something stupid and somewhat ill-advised simply to please Paula. Maybe he actually deserves the title of best friend a little more, eh?
“What happened to her law school friend, Sunil?” you might ask. To that I say, “y’know, I don’t know.” I did see him on The Real O’Neals the other day, so, I mean, he’s still alive.
I’d also like to know Valencia’s thoughts on this whole matter. It took years of manipulation to get Josh to even consider proposing, and now Rebecca’s going to lock him down in two weeks? Those have got to be some complicated emotions.
Only two more episodes until this circus fire reaches maximum carnage and I’m enjoying (read: cringing in secondhand embarrassment of) every minute.
Musical Numbers
“Devil Winds”
(This song had several reprisals, including a callback to one of my personal anthems, “You Stupid Bitch.”)
“Let’s Have Intercourse”
“Best Friend”
(THE most adorable song.)
Sh*t Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Characters Say
- Nathaniel: “Usually you look like how librarians look in real life.”
- Rebecca: “It feels like the carrot’s still in the dip, if you know what I’m saying.” Paula: “Yeah. Ew. But yeah.”
- Darryl: “I wasn’t eavesdropping. I was listening actively from afar.”
- Karen: “Those are beauts!” (Her delivery of this line is sublime.)
- Nathaniel: “I think when people say that they’re Ravenclaw, they really think they’re Gryffindor, but they don’t want to sound too braggy.” (As a proud Slytherin, may I just say… hehe.)
- Karen’s version of “The Math of Love Triangles.” I died. Stephnie Weir is just… a god-send.
