Timeless Review: The Last Ride of Bonnie and Clyde (Season 1 Episode 9)
With “The Last Ride of Bonnie and Clyde” gracing our screens this week, it’s about time we address the shipping elephant in the Timeless room.
That’s right, folks. We’re going to talk about Lyatt.
One would think that a romance-heavy episode such as this would bring out the chemistry between a series’ potential ship, but, in the case of Lyatt, the pairing simply paled in comparison to Bonnie and Clyde — who, if we’re being honest, completely stole the show.
Fans have been pulling for this ship since day one, but Wyatt has never shown any interest in pursuing any romantic relationship at all, let alone one with Lucy. He has consistently been fixated on the death of his wife and how he can go back and save her.
Even Lucy hasn’t really shown any particular, major interest in Wyatt.
But, then again, Lucy hasn’t really focused on relationships at all this season — and neither has this show, really, given that her alternate universe husband was introduced way back at the start of the season and we literally never saw him again until this week. He barely even came up until now.
Again, it seems as though they tried to cram a bunch of character development in to a single episode. Lucy is suddenly interested in giving her husband a chance, despite her apparent crush on Wyatt.

Though they may have gone about introducing this potential pairing in a weak way, one redeeming quality the ship has is that Lucy seems to be the one pining after Wyatt (in this episode, at least). It looks as though Wyatt has never thought of Lucy as a potential romantic interest, whereas perhaps it’s something Lucy has already been considering, and it is interesting to see her gently try to coax him in to opening his mind to the idea.
It is intriguing to see the idea being planted in Wyatt’s head, and it is something that Matt Lanter plays wonderfully.
It would have been stronger if we had seen a bit more of Lucy’s interest alluded to in the previous episodes, but we can forgive the show for this, depending on how they choose to move forward with the pairing.
It could be really great (and angst-y) to watch Wyatt war with himself over his devastation and devotion to his dead wife versus this new, unfamiliar connection he may or may not have with Lucy.
Here’s hoping they play with this and flesh it out properly. The potential for greatness, as always, is right there — this cast is strong enough to do just about anything. They just need the chance.
As it stands, however, this particular reviewer is struggling to see romantic chemistry between these two, especially when they’re put next to Bonnie and Clyde, who were so obviously in love that it makes Lucy and Wyatt look awkward and uncomfortable with the idea of being romantic in any way, shape, or form with each other.
Bonnie and Clyde are magical, however, and it makes the episode fantastic and fun to watch.
They are, quite arguably, the best “famous historical figure cameo” on the show to date.

What about Rufus? I thought this was a great episode for him, but not a word? Come on, where’s the love?
I thought the engagement story was the best moment in the series to date. The chemistry between Wyatt and Lucy at that moment was to me, strong and palpable. I hope they build on it.
I think Wyatt has shown some kind of interest in Lucy prior. There was definitely a hint of jealousy from him in the Ian Fleming episode. But I think they are trying to keep from moving it ahead too fast. But there is definite potential for this pairing. And I think know Matt and abigale have great chemistry. All three leads do honestly.
