Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Review: Who Needs Josh When You Have A Girl Group? (Season 2 Episode 6)
Rebecca and Paula’s relationship caves in like the faulty roof of a murder house.
On Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 6 “Who Needs Josh When You Have A Girl Group?” Rebecca is officially moving on (like, creates her own hashtag #movedon), and like Ginsburg, Sotomayer, and Kagan, she and her best gals are ready to take over the world.
Zigga-zow!
Just one tiny problem: Rebecca’s crippling emotional issues.
There’s a particular reason why the phrase “you can’t force friendship,” is repeated several times throughout the episode.
In Season 1, we watched Rebecca struggle with what it means to be a girlfriend. Everything she’d done was an attempt to make Josh (and Greg) believe she would be the perfect spouse.
Now that both those men are out of her life, Rebecca’s taken up a more personal (dare I say, noble) challenge of proving that she could be the perfect friend. But, as she has done with dating, Rebecca mixes up the idea of friendship with the act of being a friend.
Friends support each other, sometimes acting as a second family, the one that you get to pick this time. Sure, they can have fun hashtags when they hang out; matching shirts are a happy bonus. But sadly, the type of emotional support that comes with true friendship is something that Rebecca has lacked her entire life, until Paula came along.
We get to watch Rebecca learn, and as painful as that might be, it’s also satisfying. Rebecca learning how to be a good human person is the entire premise of the show, after all.
On the other side, there’s Rent, er, Ten, er… Trent!
Josh has got his own dependency issues to work out, Greg is on the other side of the country dealing with his damage, but Trent! Trent’s a virginal man with a plan. His crazy matches Rebecca’s in a way that makes even the childlike Josh Chan wary. They’re perfect together.
And, hoo boy. This is going to be an unmitigated disaster. Thank you, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend for quality Friday night television that holds a mirror up to everyone’s worst sides.
Meanwhile, poor Paula.
What to say about Paula? I was fully prepared to be completely on her side in the Rebecca-Paula feud, but while she’s ultimately in the right, both she and Rebecca make very good points during their argument.
No, Paula shouldn’t have to ask for emotional support, but neither can she withhold important information on the premise that Rebecca wouldn’t care. It’s about meeting halfway and adjusting to each others’ forms of communication.
Yes, Rebecca is a bit self-centered (understatement of the year), but when she finally takes the time to stop thinking about herself and ask what’s up, Paula could have at least allowed Rebecca the benefit of the doubt.
And of course, an episode wouldn’t be complete without Darryl peppering the office with a bit of his anxiety.
No one on this show is perfect. Even the immaculately conceived WhiJo was starting to show cracks in the previous episode. So, buckle up, folks. We’re in for some damage.

Sh*t Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Characters Say
- Trent: “In-CHILL-trate.” (Oh, boy.)
- Rebecca: “We nostalgically watch Hocus Pocus.”
- Trent: “It’s Trent. Take out the ‘T’, it’s ‘rent.’ Take out the ‘R’, it’s ‘ten.’ It’s real easy to remember that way.”
- Sunil: “She left a [suicide] note on Facebook. And this was before all those different ‘like’ options, so people didn’t know what to do.” (I laughed so hard at this, I had to leave the room to collect myself.)
- Angelique: “I even use it as a hand lotion which is why I’m always dropping things.”
- Sunil: “I haven’t worked out since birth.”
- The phrase “Kenickie’s understudy.”
