18 Fantastic Sci-Fi / Fantasy TV Shows from 2016

13. 11.22.63

11.22.63 James Franco

One of the “What if” questions that is always asked is, “if you could go back in time, would you stop Kennedy’s assassination in 1963?” Well, 11.22.63 answers this very question.

James Franco gives one of his best performances in years as Jake Epping in the Hulu mini-series adaptation of Stephen King’s book.

Not only does it have the suspense of whether or not Jake can change history, but it also gives a view of life in the 60’s as Jake falls in love with local school-teacher Sadie in the past. 11.22.63 feels like a old-school suspense thriller but with loads of heart.

14. Orphan Black

In over four seasons, Orphan Black has set the standard in terms of being one of the best sci-fi shows out there today. As it enters its final season, we must remark again on how great Tatiana Maslany has been playing 5 different clones (Sarah, Alison, Helena, Cosima, and Rachel) when some people have trouble playing one.

This season showed us more of the origins of Beth (another role played by Tatiana) and highlighted by great supporting arcs like Sarah’s adopted brother Felix’s search for his birth family. Clone Club is still as strong as ever.

15. Game of Thrones

game-of-thrones

2016 was a big year for Game of Thrones as it delivered so many different memorable moments. We got to see the resurrection of Jon Snow and the tragic origin of Hodor’s name. And Cersei once again showed she was the baddest Queen in all of the Seven Kingdoms (with maybe the exception of Sansa Stark).

That Game of Thrones continues to get buzz and has become a true pop culture phenomenon speaks highly to how consistently excellent the series remains.

16. Supernatural

In its 12th season, Supernatural has been rejuvenated with the return of Sam and Dean’s mother Mary Winchester and the insanity of the devil Lucifer.

It’s a testament to the show that it can still tell interesting stories after so long and keep the core of the show (family) intact.  From Dean killing Adolf Hitler to exorcising Lucifer from the President of the United States, the wild ride continues for the Winchester family and the demon/angel stories have no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

17. Teen Wolf

Teen Wolf

Our favorite Beacon Hills high school students have not had an easy time this year. Season 6 of Teen Wolf has brought one of the most inventive choices in bad guys in a long while in the form of “The Ghost Riders” as they erase people entirely. No one can remember them or their love for them. Poor Stiles ends being one of their victims.

Seeing how the show has been able to deal with not having Dylan O’Brien for the majority of the first half of the season has been impressive as it has just picked up the suspense from previous seasons.

How will Stiles’s best friends Scott, Lydia, and Malia be able to save him? A lot of credit goes to Teen Wolf for having us so invested in this little MTV show.

18. The 100

The last season of The 100 had everything you would expect from a sci-fi/fantasy show — mind control, death, romance, and everything in between.

The 100 Season 3 of will be remembered mostly for the controversial death of Lexa and its aftermath. That moment is one we won’t forget anytime soon, but we also remember many other things from the season.

The City of Light and ALIE haunted our rag-tag group of survivors. We also got to see the redemption of Clarke Griffin as we also witness the fall of Bellamy Blake. Going into the new season, we’ll see if Bellamy, Clarke, Raven, and the 100 can accomplish its biggest task yet of saving the earth from nuclear annihilation.

Charles is a full-time fan of television and movies when he's not swamped by his many cats. He's also a proud Uncle who can't wait to show his nieces and nephews all of J.J. Abrams' TV work. He loves all things DC TV and Agents of SHIELD.

  • Thans for the gracious shout out to my favorite series of this millenia, “12 Monkeys”. Hopefully as more and more people are taking note of its brave, imaginative writing and insanely talented cast it won’t remain underrated for long.

    • Hey, thanks for commenting! It seems to be working fine on my end. Can you give it another try? It may have been a temporary issue.

  • “Jennifer Morrison and Colin O’Donoghue have made Emma and Hook one of the best couples on television.”

    YES!!! ALL OF THIS!!!

  • I would recommend The Expanse, Incorporated, both from SyFy Channel and Travelers on Netflix to the mix of science fiction series. Three series that most certainly will be part of my 2017 watch list.
