You’re The Worst Review: Talking to Me, Talking to Me (Season 3 Episode 10)

Reviews, You're the Worst

After a couple of heavier episodes,You’re the Worst continues with a more lighthearted tone with Season 3 Episode 10 “Talking to Me, Talking to Me” … until it introduces a set of existential questions that will most likely be the focus of the rest of the season, at least to some extent.

Jimmy, still haunted by the voice of his deceased father, is ready to take extreme actions in order to get rid of it and start living fully as himself.

Questioning whether he can be a writer anymore (writing was something he chose as a career just to piss off his father), Jimmy decides to build a tree house in order to reflect on his life.

Dysphoria, meaning a state of unease or dissatisfaction with life, is something traditional situation comedies usually avoid, but as we all have probably noticed by now, “traditional” is probably not the best word to use when describing You’re the Worst.

Like the previous two seasons, the third season of the show has really dug deep into what brings unhappiness to the characters and somehow manages to still make the viewers laugh.

After realizing the role her mother has played in the development of her depression, Gretchen seems to be taking therapy more seriously. While she does not succeed 100%, she is at least trying, and for the first time in a long time, it really feels like she is herself.

Gretchen’s attempts to be mindful are quite hilarious to watch. She tries reading a book given to her by her therapist, fails at meditating, and finally realizes that Lindsay might be some sort of “mindfulness Guru” who can help her on her journey.

Lindsay as a mindfulness Guru? Quite unexpected, to say the least.

The relationship between Edgar and Dorothy has been on the backburner for a few episodes but is brought back to the narrative in “Talking to Me, Talking to Me.” Edgar, now off his meds and smoking pot pretty much all the time, ends up getting a job as a comedy writer for a TV show. While celebrating his new-found success, he probably doesn’t even realize he just got the dream job Dorothy has been working towards for years.

Collette Wolfe, the actress playing Dorothy, has never really gotten her chance to shine on You’re the Worst, but I think “Talking to Me, Talking to Me” gave her a chance for that, and hopefully, we will see more of her in the future.

The silent devastation on Dorothy’s face when Edgar tells her his good news is one of the highlights of the episode. It’s a moment of so much emotion. In a way, it is a moment of crushed dreams.

While Edgar deserves all the happiness he can get, You’re the Worst quite brilliantly highlights how one person’s happiness can have the capability to hurt someone, even when that is not the intention. Seeing how Dorothy fights to keep her devastation at bay in front of Edgar shows that she really cares for him.

Jimmy: I don’t recognize my life. I don’t know whether I’ve made any of the right decisions. Everything could be wrong.

The last few minutes of the episode return the show back to a more serious tone with Jimmy reflecting his life from his tree house and realizing that he does not recognize his life anymore. Have the choices he has made been the right ones? Could everything be wrong for him, including Gretchen?

While the relationship between Jimmy and Gretchen is usually just fun and games, the moment Gretchen realizes that Jimmy is questioning their relationship hits hard. Quite similarly to Dorothy, she has this expression of quiet and raw devastation on her face.

While Jimmy also deserves happiness and closure after the loss of his father, his realization that everything in his life might have been wrong manages to hurt Gretchen in a way he probably himself does not even realize.

The ease between the two portrayed at the beginning of the episode dissolves and in just a few seconds, everything seems to change.

With three episodes left, it is quite easy to predict that this existential awakening of Jimmy’s will be one of the main focuses of the remaining season. Is Gretchen wrong for Jimmy? What will happen to the two?

Stray observations:

  • My dreams of Lindsay and Paul finding harmony are crushed when Lindsay visits the Woman’s Health Clinic for an abortion. I get why she made the decision to do so, and hopefully, at some point, we will see Lindsay finding her happiness.
  • Jimmy’s realization that he indeed is a writer is done super well — by engaging in manual labor, he tries to keep thoughts of his book at bay but ends up realizing that creativity can come from all sorts of things and places.
  • The expression on Gretchen’s face when Jimmy does not sit next to her on the couch will haunt me!
