What happens when you bring Hitler to Supernatural?

Well, I’m glad you asked.

Supernatural Season 12 Episode 5 tackles that very question with return of Season 8’s Thule Society storyline.

It’s always nice to see a familiar face, and there is no other show that recycles long-lost characters the way that Supernatural does. So when Adam pops up on-screen, it’s easy to jump right back into his story – though, it’s not quite his story anymore. He’s only around for like, thirty seconds.

The Thule Society fights off Nazi necromancers, and this time, they’re working to bring back the ultimate Nazi – Adolf Hitler himself.

I don’t know if it was planned that this would be the episode that aired specifically this week in history. As the world finds itself protesting hate and promoting love, an episode of television that highlights the demise of one of history’s greatest villains by the hand of one of television’s most beloved Winchesters feels all-too appropriate.

And it makes me smile.

It makes me smile not only because of its subject matter, and the squashing of evil deeds, but because the necromancer Nazis are laughable. There’s absolutely no way that I can take them seriously as a real threat, especially once Hitler arrives on the screen, and seems more like Jimmy Stewart waking up at the end of It’s a Wonderful Life.

“The One You’ve Been Waiting For” isn’t really the one I was waiting for. In fact, it wasn’t at all what I thought it would be. Bumbling Nazis aren’t scary at all.

But “The One You’ve Been Waiting For” is the one I needed this week, because it takes me to a place where I can laugh when hatred is squashed.

As far as filler episodes go, this one probably won’t register in my memory. That is, unless Dean reminds me. Which undoubtedly will happen for many seasons to come.

Dean: I killed Hitler. I think I deserve some pie. Did I mention I killed Hitler?

I do want to bring up Sam, and the way that he connects to Ellie, the young woman who not only discovers that she is the last living ancestor to Hitler, but also that she’s adopted.

Sam’s chemistry with Ellie is off the charts. I can’t be the only one who thinks so.

Sure, Sam and Dean ALWAYS seem to have chemistry with the ladies they rescue along the way – but this one stood out to me.

Maybe it’s the way Sam lingers just a little longer than normal after walking away from her. Maybe it’s his long sigh before telling Dean to drive off. If she were to reappear, and by some chance become a player in Sam’s life, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Maybe Ellie will be Sam’s Lisa. But most likely, I’m wishful thinking for the future that the Winchesters deserve to drive off into someday.

Also – where are Castiel and Crowley? I understand that they’re off having their own adventures, but a check-in every episode would be nice, just to remind us that they’re still around. I miss them.

  • I miss Crowley and Cass to. They are regulars, you would think that regulars are shown regularly. going on 3 episodes in a row No Crowley and Cass and that’s just wrong. The show is not the same without them

    • Agreed! I don’t mind if they aren’t the focus of every episode, but a check-in would be nice. A quick phone call. SOMETHING!
