Blindspot Review: We Fight Death on Thick Lone Waters (Season 2 Episode 8)

Blindspot, Reviews

Game seven of the World Series pushed this episode forward a week, but it was worth the wait.

Blindspot Season 2 Episode 8, “We Fight Death on Thick Lone Waters,”  is consistent with what we have come to expect from the series.

Blindspot is a show that I always equate with really tight storytelling. I’m constantly captivated by the amount they manage to pack into an hour, but I am starting to think I may want to join the side of Sandstorm.

Why? One of the many subplots this episode involved Zapata, Reade, and the knife Zapata stole from evidence!

When Zapata stole the knife from evidence on “Resolves Eleven Myths,” I had the feeling it was a pretty dumb move, but this week it was like the nuclear football with Reade and Zapata trying to figure out how to get it back into evidence.

What is their solution? Blackmail someone into putting it back for them.

Because if there is one thing we’ve learned from Blindspot, it’s that blackmail works and gets people to do all kinds of stuff they don’t want to do–including putting a pen in Mayfair’s office. (For the record, no we do not advocate applying this to practice in your real life! This is sarcasm people!)

There are just no words for this story-line. I’m pretty sure blackmailing someone to put the knife back is just going to backfire and at the end Shepherd and Roman will stand there saying: “Told you so” as they unmask this fiendish plot.

Now, we have to remember that the origins of this story-line come from one of Jane’s tattoos. Naturally, I’m suspicious of how events precipitate in story arcs like this, I wouldn’t put it past them for this to be part of Sandstorms plan.

We know the Sandstorm has its eyes on Weller but that doesn’t mean that they’re not moving around the chessboard in some way. I want to believe that Sandstorm doesn’t have tendrils that extend that high.

It seems a little counter-intuitive for that to be the case, unless Sandstorm is some sort of shadow government that will come up at the end of this season or series. It actually makes sense to imagine Sandstorm as an octopus if it follows these ideals.

Perhaps, I am drawing this thread the week ends with Nas under investigation. It’s no secret that I am not a fan of Nas, in fact I don’t trust her, but on this episode, she hands Patterson a drive that contains six years of her research on Sandstorm.

This ceremonial passing of the key has me a little worried. We still don’t know who the mole is and we probably won’t for a while, but the thought plays in the back of my mind whenever I watch an episode of Blindspot.

If Sandstorm has these connections high in the government, it’s possible that the investigation is to either inoculate Nas from audience scrutiny, flush out a threat, or the drive contains a backdoor in Patterson’s computer.

Obviously, only one of these scenarios is good for Nas.

Even if none of the threads that are established and continued on this episode connect to a great Sandstorm chess game, the episode ends on a high note with Roman saying he needs Jane for phase two of Sandstorm’s plan.

While I am curious to see what Sandstorm is planning, Sandstorm’s mole outed Jane to the FBI so I don’t entirely trust Roman with her safety. Somehow I get the feeling that next week is going to be a wild ride.

It may even be slightly cathartic.
