American Horror Story Review: Chapter 9 (Season 6 Episode 9)

American Horror Story, Reviews

American Horror Story Season 6 Episode 9, “Chapter 9,” delivers fantastic performances all around and finally answers the question we’ve been asking all season.

Lee is the last person alive.

I’ve been saying since Episode 6 that I wanted either Shelby or Lee to be the one to survive and while I’m happy it’s Lee, I’m not sure that this is how I wanted her to be the one. Lee’s possession is but another twist in this twisted world of American Horror Story.

I am so very confused as to why the witch of the wood decides to feed Lee a pig heart and put her in a trance.

After everything she’s done while at the house, why does she not just kill her? What’s the real motive behind it? Is it something the Butcher wants? It’s still the blood moon so the Butcher can kill anyone she pleases with no problem.

On top of Lee’s possession, Dylan being paid by Sidney to come show up in the pigman costume to scare the house guests is another thing that shocks me.

Sidney honestly did not believe that Lee, Shelby, and Matt were telling the truth about what happened in the Roanoke house. Oh well, his ignorance gets him what he rightfully deserves, death.

Taissa Farmiga shows up as Sophie only to, sadly, be burned at stake by the Butcher along with her friend Milo while her other friend, Todd, is disemboweled. I am a little upset only because I was so sure that we would get to see Taissa play Priscilla, but yet again I am wrong.

The body count in this episode is the highest we’ve seen in any season of American Horror Story so far. It’s very clear that the showrunners are going for that real horror feel this season and they’ve done quite an excellent job of pulling it off because Monet and Audrey’s (first) deaths have me tearing up for the both of them.

Audrey and Monet’s first thing done wrong is that they don’t get the hell out of the house when Lee arrives. They can see that she has a bloody cleaver in her hand and just watched her admit that she is the one who killed her husband, Mason.

Instead of taunting Lee, they both should be leaving the house, but Monet has to rub it in that she knew Lee did it all along. That taunting then gets her thrown from the top floor to the bottom, getting impaled and ultimately dying.

Audrey has the right idea to escape, but instead of just standing at the head of the ladder to the underground tunnel she needs to be running for her life.

And, of course, because Lee is possessed she gets there wicked fast, slicing Audrey in the back and shoving her down into the room below her, Audrey hitting her head on a pipe on the way down.

The ending is foreseen and not at all shocking. Shocking by the fact that we had to watch it, but not shocking that it happened. Lee finally breaks out of her trance as the police show up, saving her and helping her to the squad car.

When Audrey shows up, Lee has no idea what had happened, but Audrey doesn’t take a chance as she grabs a firearm from a police officer and attempts to shoot Lee. That works for about .2 seconds before twelve bullets hit her in the chest and I am crying at the TV.

“Chapter 9” isn’t one of my top favorite episodes of the season, but it was still pretty high. Ryan Murphy knows how to deliver twists with such ease and I’m amazed every single time. I can’t wait to see what twist the finale will bring us.

Other Thoughts:

  1. Where is Matt Bomer at this season? He confirmed that he is in fact in this season, but we’ve yet to see him. I thought for sure he would be playing the real Ambrose, but now I’m not so sure on who it could be.
  2. Audrey deserved better.
  3. I still don’t think that Lee is indeed safe. Jether Polk is still out there, and I’m willing to bet that he tries to get revenge for the death of almost his entire family.
