The Vampire Diaries Review: Today Will Be Different (Season 8 Episode 2)
What a whirlwind of an episode!
After a perfectly adequate season premiere, The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 2 goes full steam ahead with the emotional character drama on “Today Will Be Different.”
First order of business: Stefan totally asks Caroline to marry him, and she accepts! The proposal comes out of nowhere, but I’ll take it. I don’t care if you ship these two or not, they were totally adorable and they both deserve happiness.
Stefan: I was hoping you might wear it.
Caroline: Wear it like what, like a friendship ring or…?
Stefan and Caroline are usually the optimists of the group, and I hope they continue to find little moments of bliss. Knowing this show their chance to bask in their engagement will be short-lived, but damn it if I wasn’t smiling as he asked her to literally spend eternity together.
Now, on to the rest of the episode. The siren finally has a name, and it’s Sybil.
Honestly, she seemed much more terrifying when she didn’t speak. She has influence over people’s minds, but something isn’t clicking yet on the personality front. Right now, she sort of just there.
However, her ability to step inside Damon’s mind and completely rewrite his memories of Elena is an intriguing twist. Sybil has taken Elena’s spot in his memories, so does this mean Damon will love her now? Or will he just be loyal and do as she says?
Stefan: My brother’s a lot stronger than you think.
Sybil: No he’s not.
Sybil’s grand plan remains a mystery. She does seem intent on keeping both Damon and Enzo on short leashes with no end in sight.
Despite flipping his switch, Damon kept reaching into his subconscious to find Elena. However, his love for her couldn’t save his soul from Sybil.
Now Stefan thinks he has truly lost his brother. With Sarah now dead, they are the only remaining Salvatores left.
Enzo doesn’t give in to Sybil as easily, but that doesn’t stop her from tapping into his love for Bonnie. His fight to protect her is admirable and downright heart-wrenching.
Bonnie: I can’t lose you again.
Enzo: You never lost me, Bonnie Bennett.
This couple took me by surprise last season, but their love story has been such a welcome addition to the show. Kat Graham and Michael Malarkey have terrific chemistry, and they play off of each other so well.
Lastly, there is Alaric and Georgie at the Armory.
Georgie’s unexpected connection to the unfolding mythology adds a more interesting layer to her character other than her hardcore crush on Alaric.
Her tattoo is somehow connected to Sybil or something more sinister than a siren. Also, that strange fork-looking relic with the same symbol as Georgie’s tattoo looks ominous.
If the series decides to explore the idea of hell, then we are heading into more religious territory than the show has ever gone to before.
