Supergirl Review: The Last Children of Krypton (Season 2 Episode 2)
This week Supergirl is filled with bittersweet goodbyes as Kara has to bid farewell to not only her superhero cousin, but also to her favorite boss.
I’ve been living in denial that we have to say goodbye to Cat Grant since we found out the show would be moving to The CW/Vancouver, but the “cat is out of the bag.” Cat confirms to Kara that she’s taking a leave of absence starting this week. Much like Kara, I’m thankful that Cat isn’t dying, but I can’t imagine the show without her.
Cat Grant has been a pillar of the show since the pilot, and one of my favorite characters for just as long. Both Kara and the show won’t be the same without her. Her snappy wit, incredible confidence, and unyielding faith in both Kara and Supergirl will certainly be missed.
Cat: Life is long, and you will be many different people before the end. And knowing you, every single one of them will be extraordinary.
Cat gets to say goodbye to both Kara and Supergirl, and in her final scene this week she promises to return in the future. And I for one hope she follows through.
Kara: And come back! I know we all need change, but we need friends too.
Cat: Oh, I’ll be back.

Kara faces struggles in her personal life this week as well as her relationship with Clark puts a strain on her relationship with Alex. After Clark tells Kara he’s heading home to Metropolis, Kara briefly entertains the idea of moving there to be with him.
Alex talks some sense into her when she tells her how she feels about that idea. Alex has been there for Kara her whole life, Clark has just come back into it. It’s wonderful to see Kara get to spend time with someone just like her, but it’s important that she not forget her friends and family in the process.
Kara: I’m sorry if I ever made you feel like you’re less to me than Clark. You’re the only reason I have ever felt at home on this planet.
Alex: I’m just better when we’re together.
As with any good story, our heroes are able to set aside their differences and come together in the face of a greater threat. Kara uses what she learns in her conflict with Alex to repair their relationship (and the one between J’onn and Clark) as well as to take out the dual Metallo’s created by Cadmus.
Alex: Thought you could divide and conquer?
Kara: You might work better alone, but we don’t.
Even with Clark and Cat leaving, Supergirl still leaves the audience feeling optimistic and hopeful. Next week’s episode teases the introduction of the President, played by Linda Carter as well as the much talked about Maggie Sawyer, played by Floriana Lima. I can’t wait to see what they bring to the show. Tune in with me next week to find out!
OTHER THOUGHTS:
- James is taking Cat’s position while she’s gone! As bummed as I am that he and Kara are no longer pursuing their romantic feelings I think this is an excellent move for him, and I’m thrilled to see him in a role with more agency and power.
- Brenda Strong is doing an outstanding job as the evil head of Cadmus.
- What’s up with the boy from the pod choking Kara the moment he wakes up? Didn’t he hear her lovely promise to make him feel welcome? Honestly, the least he could do is introduce himself before he tries to take out our girl.
- What do you think of Kara’s new boss? He’s certainly no Cat, but I think he’ll come around in time.
