Grey’s Anatomy Review: Catastrophe and the Cure (Season 13 Episode 2)
Alex may have to put his career on hold.
On Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 2, Alex goes to court and pleads not guilty to a FELONY. Even though he screwed up and did something terrible, it’s hard to feel bad for him — and to feel like the felony charge is a little extreme.
It probably isn’t extreme, but that’s what is so interesting about this storyline for me. We’ve known Alex for so long. We’ve watched him grow, and we’ve seen how good of a man (and a doctor) that he can be. So of course it feels unjust for him to be put through this. There’s a built-in bias there.
Alex is also genuinely sorry for what he did. I’m dying for him to be able to explain himself — to truly explain what was going through his mind when he wailed on Andrew.
Leave it to Meredith to have good intentions but to totally screw up. I think when she corners Andrew and starts giving her “advice,” that she genuinely means well, but she also forgets her position of authority in that moment. Big mistake.
Bailey has to pull Alex from a case when he misses an important detail, and she’s not wrong that it’s generally just a bad idea to have him doing surgery now. What she gives him, though, is another opportunity.
Raise your hand if you thought the Denny Duquette Clinic had just disappeared!
I’m glad there’s finally mention of it again, because that was such an important storyline several seasons ago. Then it was just kind of… dropped. I actually hope we see Alex there for a while, because in a way, it’s going to bring some things full circle.
Let’s not forget that Denny got between Alex and Izzie in more ways than one. Izzie has been gone for a while now, but she was a big part of Alex’s life — and his growth. That’s something we should be reminded of.
Meanwhile, Jackson and April have a healthy baby that’s able to go home, but April has to stay in the hospital. It’s heart-wrenching, because all she wants is to be able to take her baby girl home. Any mother can empathize with that idea. I know I can. But Jackson takes her home with him, and seems to have this fatherhood thing down pretty easily.
I hope April takes Jackson up on his offer to move back in with him. Actually, I hope they just get back together, but even if they don’t, they need to work together as parents.
The whole love triangle thing is something I could do without. While I like the idea of Meredith having a new challenge and even a lighter sort of story, the Meredith/Riggs/Maggie thing feels weird.

It fits Meredith’s character that she’d handle it this way, though. As I said in my review of the Season 13 premiere, it’s just like Meredith to find a reason to push Riggs away rather than just be honest with Maggie. For Maggie, this is just a crush, and Meredith had already began something with Riggs before Maggie even started to set her sights on him.
Communication, you guys. That’s still a thing Meredith needs to work on.
The dinner party is as awkward as we’d expect — something I sort of love that we can always expect from Grey’s Anatomy. What I love most about it though, is Amelia’s effort in bringing Owen and Riggs back together as friends.
Other Thoughts:
- As emotional as it is to see April singing to her baby on an iPad, the song choice (“Faith” – George Michael) feels like a distraction. And of course, it leads into a cover of that song, which as usual, takes my focus away from what’s actually happening on the show. I hoped these were over!
- Richard’s role these days is to swoop in and give advice, which I kind of adore. I still have a hard time not saying “the chief.”
- Alex is so good with kids. “Nothing’s as bad as broccoli.”
