Mr. Robot, Reviews

Mr. Robot Season 2 Episode 12, “eps2.9_pyth0n-pt2.p7z,” opens with a strong, confident Elliot absolutely owning Tyrell, and I am living for it.

Confused, anxious Elliot gets on my nerves sometimes. He’s a lot sexier when he displays his power.

Tyrell: I believe in fate. There’s a reason we met. There’s something between us, I can see it.

So what, Tyrell? I said the same thing to the last guy I dated, and now we’re just friends.

But seriously, I’m surprised someone like Tyrell even believes in fate. His world is about self-aggrandizement. Does this comment mean Tyrell believes it’s his fate to be one of the most powerful men in the world?

Also, Tyrell is extremely emotional. Worse yet, he acts on his emotions in reckless ways.

He killed Sharon Knowles last season. Now he goes from threatening Elliot to almost crying in front of him. You should never show someone who has the power to destroy you how weak you really are.

Moving on…

Finally! By the grace of God, Sam Esmail does not leave us hanging until next season: Darlene is alive, and I am so thankful! But there’s something I can’t get out of my mind.

How is this possible?!

Furthermore, how is it possible that Dom is alive too? Further still, how is it possible that both of them are not only alive but have no major injuries?

Shots were fired at them at close range with an automatic weapon. That neither of them has even a flesh wound is quite a suspension of disbelief, even for Mr. Robot. I would have preferred that one of them, preferably Dom, got shot in the arm or leg at least.

Dom: I know it’s hard for you to believe this right now but trust me, by the end of this day, you and I are gonna be best friends.

Dom, shut up, you sound ridiculous. Does Darlene look like someone it’s easy to become friends with?! Let alone close friends?!

No, she doesn’t. Darlene recently hacked the most powerful corporation in the world, Dom. Show some respect.

The tricks you use with simple-minded suspects aren’t going to work with her. Your “good cop, bad cop” routine is way too obvious. Secondly, you’re not going to be able to bond with her simply because you both have vaginas.

As the finale continues, Sam Esmail decides to give us another gift and answers another burning question: who’s been calling and sending gifts to Joanna?

I wish I could say I’m shocked that it’s Scott Knowles, but I’m not. Since he’s such a minor character, this choice seems like a waste to me. It should have been someone we never would’ve thought of, like Elliot or Cisco.

God, I love it when Joanna eats men for breakfast!

She. Is. Brilliant.

She gets some things off her chest and gets to frame Scott for his own wife’s murder. She and Whiterose are the best villains on the show.

This is another great thing about Mr. Robot: all of the villains are intelligent, fully fleshed out characters with clear motivations. Although a villain on a quest for power is rather cliché, the villains on Mr. Robot are quite unique and go about their quests for power in unforeseen ways.

What I don’t love is all of the violence against women on this show. In this scene, Scott becomes Tyrell. Tyrell choked and killed Scott’s wife in a fit of rage, and now Scott chokes and almost kills Tyrell’s.

With this scene, Mr. Robot drives home its theme of duality of the psyche.

Elliot is both himself and Mr. Robot. Joanna has people killed but is also a tender, loving mother. Scott is a mourning husband and a violent man.

No character is all good or all bad.

As we come to the conclusion of the finale, as with so many episodes of Mr. Robot, I don’t quite understand what is happening.

Let’s go over what we know: Elliot’s alive. That’s good.

Given he’s the star of the show, it would be highly unlikely Esmail would kill him off, but you never know with Mr. Robot.

Angela is actively helping the cause. This should make an interesting character arc for her next season.

Leon is back, and this is one of the things I’m confused about. When is he released from jail? Is he here to stop Trenton from fixing things? Is “Do you have the time?” code?

Guess we’ll just have to wait until next season to find out!

All in all, I love “eps2.9_pyth0n-pt2.p7z,” but the reveals just aren’t exciting enough for me. It’s not shocking that Darlene and Tyrell are alive. They’re great characters, Sam Esmail would be a fool to get rid of them.

Other Random Thoughts:

  • I think the lights turning off and on throughout the episode signifies something, but I can’t figure out what. Do any of you know what it means?!
  • “Characters like you are not welcome here.” I love that Sam Esmail made fun of USA on USA. That’s ballsy.
